  • Last Updated on August 21, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims that “One root canal tooth can shut down 63% of your immune system.” We fact checked and found it to be False. The Claim The social media post reads ‘Dentists are the only physicians that believe you can get away with leaving dead tissue in the body. One root canal tooth can shut down 63% of your immune system.’ The post can be seen here and here and a screenshot is attached below. Fact Check What is a Root Canal? According to the American Association of Endodontists, Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth. When one undergoes a root canal, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. Can performing a root canal impair the immune system? No. Performing a root canal treatment has no inhibitory effect on the immune system. The claim stands to reason that people who get root canals would be at an increased risk of disease. But there’s no such evidence which proves that’s the case. Dr. Paridhi Garg, Endodontist, says, “The claim is absolutely wrong! On the contrary, root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, a breeding ground for harmful microorganisms, taking the burden away from the host immune system by taking care of the infection/inflammation.” Rather an untreated dental infection can lead to more serious health problems, so it’s important to visit an endodontist or dentist immediately if you are experiencing tooth pain. In a fake social media post, it is claimed that the root canal treatment can also cause cancer.
