  • Last Updated on November 8, 2024 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A social media post claims that rubbing a potato slice can make you get rid of dark spots, hyperpigmentation, blemishes and acne marks. We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim An Instagram post with the title, “Potato for Dark Spots” reads, “Just rub 1 potato slice daily on your face to get rid of dark spots, hyperpigmentation, blemishes and acne marks.” The post reached more than 3k likes until we last checked. Fact Check What can be the cause of dark spots and hyperpigmentation? Dark spots and hyperpigmentation are caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives color to our skin, hair, and eyes. Melanin is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes. When these cells become overactive or are stimulated by various factors, they produce more melanin, leading to the appearance of dark spots and patches on the skin. Several factors can contribute to the development of dark spots and hyperpigmentation: - Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun stimulate melanocytes to produce more melanin as a protective response to sun damage. Prolonged sun exposure without adequate sun protection can lead to sunspots or ‘age spots‘. - Hormonal Changes: Such changes during pregnancy can trigger hyperpigmentation in specific areas of the skin. - Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Skin inflammation caused by acne, eczema, psoriasis, or other skin conditions can lead to increased melanin production and dark spots in the affected areas. - Genetics: Some individuals may be more predisposed to developing hyperpigmentation due to genetic factors. - Skin Aging: As we age, our skin’s ability to regulate melanin production can be altered, leading to the formation of age-related dark spots. - Certain Medications: Certain medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can cause photosensitivity and contribute to hyperpigmentation. Does rubbing potatoes eliminate dark spots and hyperpigmentation? Not exactly. There is a lack of credible scientific evidence in proving that rubbing potatoes eliminates dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Potatoes do contain certain compounds, like vitamin C and enzymes, which may have mild skin-lightening properties. But their effectiveness in treating hyperpigmentation is not well-established. Research shows that potato skin may have some anti-inflammatory effects, which raises the possibility of soothing any pain or burning sensation caused due to acne. However, the research was done in vitro, and further research is needed to find conclusive results. On the contrary, other research shows that patatin, an essential compound of raw potatoes, can harm the skin. Patatin is also known to cause allergies when applied in raw form. Additionally, another study found that due to the presence of patatin, raw potato sensitivities could also be linked to latex allergies in adults. Dermatologist Dr. Jyoti Kannangath says, “Internet is filled with videos and blogs about the efficacy of potato or its juice for curing acne, pigmentation and scars. It is used as such or in combination with lemon juice, yogurt, milk, oatmeal, etc. Potato’s skin healing benefits are attributed to an enzyme catecholase, but no scientific studies can back this up. Some animal studies have shown the anti-inflammatory effects of potato skin extracts, but it is yet to be tried in humans. There are claims that potato may reduce signs of aging, increase glow, and decrease the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Still, it’s important to remember that most of these effects are anecdotal. This means they are based on user reviews and not clinical evidence.” Several social media posts claim that potatoes contain retinol and can help eliminate acne scars. But this isn’t scientifically correct. Can there be any side effects of using potatoes on the skin? Yes. In some cases, using raw potato on the skin can cause an allergic reaction due to the presence of a binding protein called patatin. The signs of an allergic reaction to raw potatoes include redness and/or swelling of the skin, itching, hives, itchy or runny nose, difficulty in breathing, wheezing and rarely, anaphylaxis (a life-threatening condition). Another social media post claims that applying mixture of potato juice and aloe vera gel to the under-eye area for is the most effective home remedy to reduce puffiness and dark circles around the eyes. How to prevent hyperpigmentation and dark spots? Preventing hyperpigmentation involves using broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and protecting the skin with appropriate clothing and hats. For existing dark spots, treatments may include topical creams containing ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, vitamin C, or alpha hydroxy acids, chemical peels, laser therapies, or microdermabrasion. Consulting a dermatologist can help determine the underlying cause of hyperpigmentation and provide personalized treatment options.
