  • Fact Check: 2014 video from Russia now viral as Ukraine helicopter tragedy that killed interior minister A video showing a chopper bursting into flames went viral on social media following a helicopter crash outside Kyiv that killed more than a dozen people. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is from a 2014 air show in Russia. It is not related to the Ukraine tragedy. A deadly helicopter crash outside Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, killed more than a dozen people including the country’s interior minister Denys Monastyrsky on January 18. A French-made Super Puma helicopter crashed near a nursery outside Kyiv on January 18. Fourteen people were killed in the incident. Ukraine has not accused Russia of being directly involved in the crash. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insisted the tragedy resulted from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He has also ordered an investigation. Following this, a video showing a chopper bursting into flames is now viral on social media. Those sharing it claimed it showed the horrific tragedy in Kyiv. The 17-second-long clip shows a chopper bouncing on the ground, and then bursting into flames. The archived versions of similar posts can be seen here and here. AFWA found that the video is from a 2014 air show in Russia. AFWA probe We reverse-searched the viral video's keyframes and found it uploaded to the YouTube channel "Burak Ayten". According to this channel, the video showed a Mi-8 helicopter crash in Gelendzhik, Russia. We also found multiple news reports from 2014 that contained more extended versions of the video. As per these reports, the chopper crashed during the international airshow Gidroavisalon 2014 in Russia’s Gelendzhik on September 4, 2014. The helicopter belonged to Panh Helicopters, a Russian aviation company. All three people on board died in the incident. The same video was earlier fact-checked by AFWA when it was falsely shared in the context of a tragedy in India. A helicopter carrying Kedarnath pilgrims crashed into a hill in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district on September 18, 2022. It is, thus, clear that the video is old and unrelated to the recent chopper crash in Ukraine.
