  • Fact Check: This is NOT Rashi Kanojiya of UP who has been selected for Indian Women's Cricket squad This is not Rashi Kanojiya at all. The cricketer's father confirmed this to India Today. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is not Rashi Kanojiya at all. The cricketer’s father confirmed this to India Today. In a country of more than 1.4 billion, there are a few who get to represent India on the cricket field wearing the blue jersey. So, when Rashi Kanojiya from the Agra district in Uttar Pradesh made it to the Women's National Cricket Team, social media was filled with congratulatory posts. Many shared a photo of a young woman dressed in a salwar suit while congratulating Kanojiya. The photo was featured in several congratulatory Tweets and Facebook posts. Similar posts can be seen here, here. India Today, however, found that this photo was not Kanojiya’s at all. Our Probe A keyword search about Kanojiya's selection led us to a Jagran report from July 3, 2023, which featured a picture of the left-arm orthodox spinner practising. Kanojiya’s photo in the article did not resemble the person in the viral picture. Subsequent searches led us to one of a report in Patrika that featured a portrait of Kanojiya. Upon comparing both images, it became apparent that the viral photo was not Kanojiya’s at all. To further confirm this, India Today reached out to Ashok Kanojiya, the cricketer’s father, who said that the viral image was not of his daughter. He said that he did not know who the photo belonged to. We ran the viral image through Facecheck, a search engine that allows you to search the internet using a photo of a face. Based on the results, it appears that the image has been on the internet for quite some time. It has been used to create numerous social media profiles on different platforms. Some can be seen here, here, here and here. Per news reports, both Deputy Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, goofed up when they shared the viral photo while congratulating the Agra cricketer. While Pathak later tweeted the correct photo, Maurya just deleted the erroneous tweet. So, while we could not independently identify the person in the viral image, it is abundantly clear that she is not Rashi Kanojiya from Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
