  • Fact Check: This video DOES NOT show UP police thrashing Muslims after Namaz ban India Today found that the video shows a two-year-old incident from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, during an Eid Milad-Un-Nabi procession. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral video shows a two-year-old incident from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. A video of police personnel lathi-charging and dispersing a group of people was widely shared on social media. Allegedly, it showed Uttar Pradesh police thrashing Muslims offering Namaz on the road. These posts implied that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has brought a law in Uttar Pradesh to criminalise the offering of Namaz on the roads. A Facebook user, claimed: “Such joy to see this. Yogi ji need of the hour to set straight religious fanatics. NEW RULES. Vote for BJP!” The archived version of one such post can be seen here. India Today found that this was a two-year-old incident in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The video shows police caning a gathering after some miscreants pelted stones during the Milad-Un-Nabi procession. Our Probe We noticed that many responded to the viral post claiming that the incident was actually from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. In the video, we noticed that a shop’s shutter had “S Deen Tailors” written on it. Using these clues, we found the shop in the Gohalpur area of Jabalpur. With the help of some keywords, we found a Facebook post on the "Mera Shehar Jabalpur" page, dated October 22, 2021. The post contained visuals similar to the viral video. The caption explained that these scenes unfolded during the Milad-un-nabi procession in Jabalpur, which prompted police intervention. Subsequently, we came across several media reports from October 2021. The Free Press Journal reported that violence erupted in Dhar, Jabalpur, during the religious procession that was taken out on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi. The report noted that a ruckus ensued after participants of a procession decided to deviate from the permitted route. The Indian Express reported that at least four persons were arrested, five others were detained, and more than 100 people were booked for the violence. Some other reports corroborating the facts of the incident can be seen here and here. While Uttar Pradesh has indeed implemented a complete ban on public Namaz through executive order, it is clear that this particular viral video has no link to Uttar Pradesh or Namaz ban order.
