  • Fact Check: Years old flash flood video from Indonesia FALSELY shared as recent Kullu event India Today found that the video is from 2016 and not from India at all. It's from Sangihe in Indonesia. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This clip is neither from Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, nor recent. The video shows a 2016 incident in Sangihe, Indonesia. In Himachal Pradesh, relentless heavy rains leading to landslides and flash floods reportedly killed more than 90 people, aside from widespread destruction of property, displacement, and injuries. Among the many horrific videos of the climate disaster from the state viral on social media was a clip of a cloudburst. The video showed people running on a waterlogged road and screaming as the cloudburst happened in the backdrop. Allegedly, this video was shot in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. Another one twitted the video with the same claim. The archived version of one such post can be seen here. India Today found that the video is from 2016 and not from India at all. It’s from Sangihe in Indonesia. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video on Yandex led us to a news report published on the Indonesian website Liputan6, dated June 23, 2016, which contained the same video. Reportedly, on June 22, 2016, landslides and floods hit the Tahuna district of the Sangihe Regency in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Floodwaters reportedly damaged the houses. A subsequent search led us to the official YouTube channel of the iNews, the largest news network in Indonesia. The same video was uploaded on that channel with the same information on June 23, 2016. Another Indonesian website Brilio.net reported the same information on June 23, 2016. The report also contained the same video. Per the report, a Facebook user called Feby Ebhy Manatar uploaded the video when terrible flash floods and landslides hit the Tahuna area. Feby Ebhy Manata's Facebook bio says she is from New Zealand and living in Tahuna, Sulawesi Utara, Indonesia. India Today has reached out to her, seeking more details about the viral video. This report will be updated as and when she responds. However, it is more than clear that viral video has nothing to do with the recent climate disaster in Himachal Pradesh.
