Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This gruesome video shows a member of a Mexican drug cartel killing a person belonging to a rival gang. An extremely gruesome video of a person slicing open the chest of another man, extracting an organ from inside, and eating it has been widely shared on social media in the context of the Israel-Hamas conflict. A Twitter user shared the video and wrote, “Hamas Terrorist can be seen taking butchering an Israeli citizen, calving out his heart and then eating it. The victim was alive through his ordeal! Wake up! These are Monsters! This footage is haunting me but it’s the reality of what Israel is dealing with!” India Today Fact Check found that this video is from 2020 and shows a member of a Mexican drug cartel killing a rival gang member. Our Probe We noticed that several people responded to the viral post saying that this video was old and from Mexico. A subsequent keyword search in Spanish led us to an August 24, 2020, report by the Mexican newspaper “El Sol de La Laguna”. Per the report, the video showed an alleged Jalisco New Generation Cartel member extracting and eating the heart of a drug trafficker who belonged to the Tepalcatepec Cartel. Reportedly, this incident occurred in a rural area of the state of Michoacan in Mexico. Multiple Spanish-language news outlets reported this incident in August 2020. Mexican drug cartels are leading suppliers of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and other illicit narcotics to the United States. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is among Mexico’s fastest-growing cartels, with operations in more than two-thirds of the country.
