| - A graphic is being circulated on social media platforms with a claim that the newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Delhi has increased the metro fare.
What did users say?: An Instagram user named 'kamleshyadavap' shared the graphic with a caption in Hindi that loosely translated to, "Danger has started in Delhi, BJP has increased the fare of metro. New gift of New Delhi government."
(More archives of similar claims can be found here, here, and here.)
Is this claim true?: No. The viral graphic is old and could be traced back to at least October 2017.
There are no recent news reports to support the claim that the BJP has increased the fare for Delhi metro.
How did we find that out?: On conducting a reverse image search on the viral graphic, we came across the same visual published in a news report by Navbharat Times.
The report was published on 10 October 2017, which said that the Delhi Metro Board has decided to implement new fares and will come into effect soon.
The revised fare came into effect despite the efforts of the then Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
What did the DMRC say?: Responding to these claims, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on its official X account clarified that the fares have not been revised or increased.
The post uploaded on 12 February said, " Delhi Metro's fares can only be revised by an independent Fare Fixation Committee which is nominated by the Government. Presently there is no such proposal for the constitution of any Fare Fixation Committee."
Conclusion: It is clear that as of when this report was being written, Delhi metro fares were not increased making the viral claim false.
