  • Fact Check: India map smeared with colours on Holi is not taken from space by NASA Holi is a festival of colours, celebrated by millions of Indians. It marks the beginning of Spring and the victory of good over evil. It begins with the lighting bonfires and people gather around them singing, dancing and praying in a ritual called Holika Dahan. Claim :Viral image was taken by NASA from space on the occasion of Holi on March 25, 2024 Fact :The viral image was not taken by NASA, it is a morphed one Holi is a festival of colours, celebrated by millions of Indians. It marks the beginning of Spring and the victory of good over evil. It begins with the lighting bonfires and people gather around them singing, dancing, and praying in a ritual called Holika Dahan. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Phalguna when everyone gathers to play Holi and smear colours on each other. After the festival this year, an image showing an Indian map with various states smeared in different colours is being shared on X with the claim that the image was taken from space by NASA on the Holi day. The image is in circulation with the caption: “1st time NASA image of India seen from space on Holi. Feel proud in new India. Share in your RWA WhatsApp before Soros makes NASA delete this image from their servers!” Fact check: The claim is False. The image is an edited one. NASA did not publish any such image on its website. As we performed a reverse image search on Google, we could not find the image being shared on any media website. When observed carefully, we can see that the colours have been digitally added to the India map. Each state has been smeared with a specific colour, which is impossible in reality. People celebrate Holi using all the colours but not one specific colour. When we searched images published on the NASA website, we found no such images published on it. When searched with the keywords “Holi”, we could not find any related images published on the website. We also checked the social media handles of NASA like X, Facebook, and Flickr stock photos, but could not find any images about India on Holi. Therefore, the image of India filled with colours on the occasion of Holi is not an original image published by NASA. It is a morphed image. The claim is False.
