  • Last Updated on September 1, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims that chlorophyll can cleanse and detox the body. We fact-checked and found the claim to be mostly false. The Claim A Pinterest post has provided the benefits of chlorophyll in a list claiming it can cleanse and detox the body. We have attached a screenshot of the post below: Fact Check What is chlorophyll? Chlorophyll is a naturally occurring chemical produced by the green pigment in plants. This green pigment exhibits anti-inflammatory benefits. Its most prevalent formulation is chlorophyllin. This is a water-soluble semi-synthetic chlorophyll derivative. Additionally, chlorophyllin is thought to be more readily absorbed by the body than chlorophyll. This is due to the inclusion of copper instead of magnesium. These synthetic chlorophyll compositions can be applied topically or consumed orally. Thus, chlorophyll supplements are not the same as those found in specific houseplants. Chlorophyll, on the other hand, can be naturally acquired from plants and herbs. Is it true that chlorophyll can cleanse and detox the body? Not exactly. The idea that chlorophyll can cleanse and detoxify the body is a popular claim in some alternative and natural health circles. However, it is not fully supported by modern science. While chlorophyll is vital for plants, there is limited scientific support for the idea that consuming chlorophyll has significant detoxification or cleansing effects on the human body. One of the social media posts says that herbs can cleanse the organs. Detoxification and cleansing are complex physiological processes primarily managed by the liver and kidneys, which work to eliminate waste products and toxins from the body. There is no strong scientific evidence to suggest that chlorophyll supplements or foods high in chlorophyll have a direct or significant impact on these processes. However, the claims about its effectiveness in cleansing the body from the mouth to the anus and purifying the blood are not supported by scientific evidence. Many of the claims lack rigorous scientific research and may be based more on anecdotal reports or marketing. Dietician Priyanka informs, “Chlorophyll is found in many green, leafy vegetables, and consuming a diet rich in such vegetables can be part of a healthy lifestyle. These foods provide essential nutrients and fiber, which can support overall health. However, any claims about chlorophyll’s specific detoxification properties should be viewed with skepticism and should not replace established, evidence-based approaches to maintaining good health, such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, and staying hydrated. If you are considering dietary changes for health purposes, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian for personalized guidance.” We further researched and found that chlorophyll has anti-aging and wound-healing properties. They also have the ability to aid in blood purification. It may also help to reduce redness of the skin and even itching. It may also aid in hormonal imbalance and weight loss. Dietician Priyanka further adds, “Chlorophyll is usually well-tolerated. Avoid chlorophyll supplements in powder or capsule form. But you should definitely include chlorophyll rich food items in your diet like green leafy vegetables in the form of sabzi, fresh juices or soup”. Furthermore, chlorophyll is a recognized absorber of sunlight. Thus, sun protection is recommended. On the contrary, chlorophyll does have some potential health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants and may have mild anti-inflammatory properties. Some people use chlorophyll supplements for purposes, including reducing acne. However, using chlorophyll for skin problems may have certain drawbacks. We asked Dermatologist Dr. Jyothy Kannangath whether liquid chlorophyll could cure acne. She responded saying that, “Chlorophyll-infused water has recently gained popularity because of the promotion by social media influencers. Regardless of the fact that chlorophyll has antioxidant qualities, research indicating that it may reduce oxidative damage caused by hazardous carcinogens is limited.” She further advises that drinking liquid chlorophyll to get rid of acne or improve your skin could make it worse. As it creates concentrated levels of chlorophyll in your body, which is unhealthy. Chlorophyll, on the other hand, can be used to treat acne in conjunction with photodynamic therapy. And this should never be a DIY treatment.
