This video is from October 7 this year and it shows a Palestinian man from Gaza breaking down in tears after losing his brother.
After an intensive manhunt that had lasted more than a year, Israeli troops killed Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar on October 17. The Israeli military thereafter released footage of a heavily wounded Sinwar attempting to throw a stick at a mini drone recording this— his final moments.
A video now going viral shows a man howling and crying in shock, allegedly because of Sinwar's death. One post featuring the video claimed: “This guy was laughing and dancing on 7 Oct in the streets of Gaza and today lost his mental balance after elimination of Yahya Sinwar.”
The video was shared on Facebook with captions like, "Yahya Sinwar's elimination has seemingly led to significant mental health impacts on many Gaza residents."
India Today Fact Check has found that the video predates Sinwar’s death and therefore does not show people mourning him.
Our Probe
We observed that the video shared on X was actually taken from another post from an account called “dudi dolev”. The same account’s watermark is also present in the video going viral. This account had shared the video on October 7, but the post contained no details about the people featured in it.
Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the video, we came across an Instagram post featuring the same clip shared on October 7. Both things made it clear that the viral clip predated Sinwar’s death.
Subsequent searches with Arabic keywords led us to the verified Instagram account Roya News, a Jordanian news channel. It shared the video on October 7. The post’s caption claimed in Arabic: “This young man lost 11 of his brothers martyred and today he is burying another.”
The post also credited the video to Hossam Shabbat. Searches revealed that Shabbat is an Al Jazeera journalist who reports from North Gaza. Shabbat shared this video on October 7 and wrote: "This young man lost 11 martyrs from his brothers, and today he says farewell to another brother."
On October 7 this year, Israel launched an airstrike on Gaza and Lebanon. According to the New York Times, the Israeli military struck buildings in the central Gazan city of Deir al Balah, killing at least 26 Palestinians.
Thus, it is clear that this video does not show Gazans' reaction to Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar's death.
