  • Fact Check: Communal clash in Karnataka? Nope, this video is from Maharashtra India Today found that the video shows a clash between Hindus and Muslims in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from a communal clash in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. The clash was over disputed land housing both a temple and a dargah. Ahead of the November 30 Telangana Assembly polls, a video of an alleged religious scuffle has been widely shared online. In it, a loud argument can be seen taking place, before it escalates into a mob attacking men dressed in saffron. Per those sharing the video, it showed Muslim aggression against a Hindu gathering in Congress-ruled Karnataka. “See how Hindus are being beaten to death in Karnataka for performing bhajan in front of the temple in the month of Kartika. If Congress comes to power in Telangana and not BJP, Hindus will be beaten to death by Muslims in the state,” reads the Telugu text accompanying one such post on Facebook. India Today found that the video shows a land dispute between Hindus and Muslims in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district. It is not related to Karnataka. Our Probe Responding to the viral video on X, many pointed out that the people in the video were speaking in Marathi. Some also asserted that this incident happened in the Guha village of Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. Taking a cue from this, we ran a keyword search in Marathi and found a report in News18 Lokmat. The report contained, aside from bits of the viral clip, footage shot from various angles. According to the report published on November 13, 2023, the video was from the Kanifnath Mandir in the Guha village of Ahmednagar. A screenshot from the viral video was also featured in a report in Dainik Bhaskar’s Divya Marathi. As outlined in this report, contested land on which the Kanifnath temple and a dargah are situated in close proximity was at the centre of the conflict. Ownership claims over this land have been asserted by both Hindus and Muslims, and the matter is currently awaiting resolution in a local court. On November 13, on the occasion of Somvati Amavasya, a group of Hindus reportedly entered the Kanifnath Devasthan and conducted religious rituals. Their use of loudspeakers during these rituals drew objections from Muslims in the locality, resulting in a clash. Reportedly, upon receiving information about the incident, Srirampur sub-divisional police officer Basavaraj Shivpuje and Rahuri police inspector Dhananjay Jadhav entered the incident site with a large contingent of police. According to a Hindustan Times report, Rakesh Ola, Ahmednagar superintendent of police also confirmed the communal clash was over disputed land. Quoting Basavraj Shivpuje, the report also said an FIR had been registered against 124 people in the matter. Four people were injured in the incident. It is hence clear that the video in question is from a communal clash in Maharashtra and not related to Karnataka.
