India Today Fact Check
Yes, Ravi Shastri did goof up while announcing the toss call. But his mistake was corrected by the match referee Andy Pycroft on the spot. Pakistan rightly won the toss.
A popular sentiment among Indian cricket fans, “lose the cup but don’t lose against Pakistan,” perfectly captures the feverish atmosphere around every India-Pakistan match. In such a situation, even the coin toss becomes a prestige issue. And following India’s recent defeat against Pakistan in Dubai, the toss has become somewhat controversial.
During the match in the super 4 edition of the Asia Cup 2022, held on September 4, cricketer turned commentator Ravi Shashtri announced the toss. Pakistan won it and elected to bowl first — eventually winning the match by five wickets.
A video of this toss is now being widely shared online. In the clip, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma tossed the coin while Pakistani skipper Babar Azam took the call. As Babar called “tails”, Shashtri appeared to announce it as “heads”. Many on social media are now blaming Shashtri for calling the toss wrongly in favour of Pakistan, implying that this is what led to the team’s victory.
AFWA found that while Shashtri did goof up the toss call, his mistake was corrected by the match referee Andy Pycroft on the spot. The outcome of the toss was not affected by Shastri’s mistake.

AFWA Probe
We found a tweet by Star Sports India, the broadcasters of the Asia Cup 2022. The tweet contained the video of the toss where Babar can be clearly heard saying “tails,” with Shastri announcing it as “heads”. But, after the toss, referee Andy Pycroft announced the outcome as “tails”. Rohit Sharma then pointed at Babar, signalling the latter won the toss.
The coin has favoured Babar, check out below what Pakistan chose to do!

Many media reports also confirmed the referee’s on-spot correction.
Who decides the conditions of the toss?
A BCCI official told AFWA that it is customary that the skipper of the home team tosses the coin while the one visiting calls it. In case both the teams are playing on foreign soil, it’s decided beforehand which team will be designated as home and which one as visitors.
Thus we concluded that Shastri’s goof-up did not affect the outcome of the toss in the September 4 India-Pakistan match.
