  • Fact Check: Video of Chinese dam shared as 'overflowing' Koyna Dam in Maharashtra A three-year-old video of an overflowing Chinese dam is doing the rounds on social media with the false claim that it is Maharashtra's Koyna dam. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is at least three years old and shows water being released from the Xiaolangdi Dam in China's Henan Province. So far, more than 200 people have lost their lives due to floods in Maharashtra. Amid this crisis, a video of a large stream of water flowing with heavy force through a dam is viral on social media with the claim that this video is of the Koyna Dam in Maharashtra. Many people are sharing this video with hashtags like ‘#MaharashtraFloods’ and ‘#MaharashtraRains’. A Facebook user shared this video with the caption, “Koyna Dam - One Of The Largest Dams In Maharashtra, India Overflowing.” India Today Anti-Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that the viral video is neither recent nor from India. The video shows the Xiaolangdi Dam of China’s Henan Province. The archived version of one such post, referring to the dam as ‘Koyna dam’, can be seen here. AFWA probe After a reverse search of the image on Yandex Search Engine, we found it in a 2019 Instagram post where its location is China. Getting a clue from here, we conducted a search using keywords in the China's native language. We found that many Facebook users from China had shared the same video in 2018. These local Facebook users have mentioned in the caption that the dam seen in the video is Xiaolangdi Dam built on the Yellow River. This dam is located in the Jiyuan city of the Henan Province in China. On digging further, we found a similar video posted in June 2020 from the official Facebook Page of China’s leading newspaper ‘People’s Daily'. We found many similarities between the two videos. In the caption, it is mentioned that on 28 June 2020, the gates of Xiaolangdi Dam were opened to release the floodwater. On comparing a still from this video with a screen grab from the viral video, one can easily spot the similarities between them. It is, however, true that water was recently released from the Maharashtra’s Koyna dam after heavy rainfall. According to the The Times of India and ‘ABP News’ the flood situation had worsened post the water release from the Dam. Thus, it is clear that at least a three-year-old video of water being released from the Xiaolangdi Dam of China is being shared as Maharashtra’s Koyna Dam.
