  • Last Updated on January 10, 2025 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A social media post claims that a back massage can cure fatty liver and belly fat. We did the fact check and termed this claim as false. The Claim An Instagram video suggests that belly fat is not caused by overeating or food but by fatty liver. It claims that massaging the back between vertebrae T8 and T12 and rubbing the area can cure fatty liver and result in belly fat loss. The post encourages viewers to practice this massage 3-4 times a day, claiming guaranteed results. Fact Check Can massaging the back between T8 and T12 cure fatty liver? No, massaging the back will not cure fatty liver. Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, occurs when fat accumulates in the liver. This condition primarily links to factors like poor diet, obesity, alcohol consumption, and certain medical conditions like diabetes type 2. While massage can help relax muscles and improve circulation, no scientific evidence shows that it can treat or reverse fatty liver disease. Fatty liver needs proper medical treatment, including lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet, exercise, and sometimes medication. We spoke to Dr Sharad Malhotra, Senior Consultant & HOD Gastroenterology Hepatology & Therapeutic Endoscopy, Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi, for his expert opinion on back massage for fatty liver. He clarifies, “Massaging the back between T8 and T12 will not cure fatty liver. Fatty liver is caused by factors like poor diet, obesity, and alcohol use. While massage can help you relax, it doesn’t address the root causes of this condition. The proper treatment for fatty liver involves lifestyle changes—eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding alcohol. Maintenance of body weight, controlling blood sugars, and portion control of food will also help. In some cases, medications may be needed if there are other health issues like diabetes or high cholesterol. It’s important to work with your doctor to manage fatty liver effectively.” What’s the best way to reverse fatty liver? The best way to reverse fatty liver is by making lifestyle changes. Start by eating a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Cut down on sugary foods, unhealthy fats, and alcohol, as these can make fatty liver worse. Regular exercise, like walking, swimming, or cycling, is also very important to help reduce fat in the liver. In some cases, a doctor might suggest medications or other treatments if needed. Always consult a healthcare provider to get the right advice for your situation. Does fatty liver cause belly fat? Not really. Belly fat and fatty liver are both related to metabolic health, but they are not directly caused by one another. Belly fat, especially the fat around your organs (called visceral fat), can increase the risk of problems like diabetes and heart disease. Fatty liver is often connected to being overweight, but it’s not the main reason for belly fat. Eating too much, unhealthy food choices, and not being active are more common causes of belly fat and obesity. The best way to tackle these issues is by having a proper diet and staying active, not by trying unreliable remedies. Can a back massage reduce belly fat? No, a back massage will not reduce belly fat. Fat loss happens when you create a calorie deficit, stay active, and follow a healthy diet. The idea of spot reduction—targeting fat loss in specific areas through massage or exercise—is a common myth. While massage can improve blood flow and ease muscle tension, it doesn’t directly help with fat loss in the belly or anywhere else. For effective weight loss, maintaining a calorie deficit is crucial. Hakim Bharmal, Master Trainer and Contest Prep Coach, explains, “When you consume fewer calories than your body needs, it creates a calorie deficit, forcing your body to burn stored fat for energy.” This can be achieved by combining healthy eating habits with regular physical activity. A calorie-deficit diet is a proven and reliable way to lose weight. THIP Media Take The claim that a back massage can cure fatty liver and belly fat is false. There is no scientific basis for this, and it should not be relied upon as a treatment. Fatty liver and belly fat require lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet and regular exercise, not a simple back massage. Always consult a healthcare professional for proper advice and treatment.
