  • Last Updated on May 26, 2022 by Neelam Singh Quick Take Multiple social media posts have claimed that the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting is connected with the monkeypox virus outbreak. Some social media posts have even claimed that the world leaders met during the WEF meeting to plan another pandemic. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False. The Claim A Twitter user claimed, “MONKEYPOX is FEAR PORN to force compliance and justify a massive power grab by the WHO and the Davos elite at the World Economic Forum. #Davos #Davos2022 #WEF #Agenda2030 #crushtheNWO”. Another social media user wrote, “The elite and many multi millionaires & billionaires are meeting again tomorrow in Davos to discuss our future. These are the same people who were behind the scamdemic, masks, lockdowns, jabs, restrictions, Ukraine, climate change scam, digital ID, depopulation”. Similar posts can also be found at other social media platforms. Fact Check Did the WEF meeting get rescheduled? Yes. The WEF meeting got rescheduled from January 2022 to May 2022 due to the increasing cases of the Omicron Covid variant. Did the WEF meeting plan the monkeypox outbreak? No. There is no evidence for that. Also, cases of monkeypox started getting recorded from May 13 while the WEF conference started on May 22. The available evidence only suggests that the rescheduling of the WEF meeting has been used nefariously to spread misinformation against monkeypox. The WEF annual meeting has been taking place since 1971 where ‘the foremost political, business, cultural and other leaders of society meet to shape global, regional and industry agendas’. The aim of 2022 52nd WEF annual meeting is ‘to address economic, environmental, political and social fault-lines exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic’. The 2021 WEF annual meeting was put off due to increasing cases of the Covid virus. Even the 2018 and 2019 highlights do not provide any clue of monkeypox being discussed during the meetings. Is monkeypox a new health condition? No. The available evidence shows that the monkeypox is not a new health condition. The outbreak has previously been recorded in the U.K., U.S., Nigeria and other countries of central and western Africa. Monkeypox was first found in a Danish laboratory in 1958 and in a human case in 1970. There is no evidence to prove that the WEF meeting was postponed to plan the monkeypox outbreak. Hence, the claim remains mostly false until proven otherwise.
