The shopkeeper who harassed the school girls is not Muslim. Didwana Police confirmed that his name is Om Prakash Regar.
In Rajasthan’s Didwana-Kuchaman district, a group of school girls thrashed a shopkeeper who was harassing them. A video of the said incident went viral on social media with many lauding these girls for standing up against the harasser. Amid this, many social media users are now claiming that the shopkeeper was Muslim and his name was Sarfaraz.
An Instagram user shared the video and wrote, “A viral video claimed to be from Didwana Rajasthan: A girl went to recharge, the shopkeeper asked her to first say I Love U. The shopkeeper refused to take the recharge m0ney & started doing obscene acts! Then the girl came with her friends & allegedly beat up shopkeeper Sarfaraz.” The archive of one such post can be seen here.

OUR PROBE
We found several media reports of the incident. According to a report in Amar Ujala, this incident happened at a mobile shop on Sikar road in the Kuchaman city of Rajasthan’s Didwana-Kuchaman district.
A few school girls had gone to this shop for a mobile recharge. The shopkeeper reportedly asked them to say “I love You” for the recharge. He went even further to grab a girl’s hand and made lewd gestures. The group of female students then thrashed the shopkeeper publicly on the street. Locals also supported them, as can also be seen in the viral video.
A report in Rajasthan Tak mentions that the police reached there but that a report had on been filed at the time.
We reached out to theDidwana Police about the viral claims. Constable Narendra Singh of Didwana Police Station told India Today Fact Check that the shopkeeper who was harassing students was not Muslim, but Hindu. Singh told us that the shopkeeper’s name was Om Prakash Regar.
Singh further stated that the incident took place on August 31. The Didwana Police had arrested Om Prakash. The constable also stated that there was no report filed against the shopkeeper, who is currently out on bail.
We also found a tweet by the Didwana Police which mentioned the shopkeeper’s name.
It is thus clear that the shopkeeper who harassed the female school students is Hindu. The incident is being shared with false communal claims.
