An incredible video of a heavily flooded road has been widely shared online. In the video, as the camera pans away from people wading through knee-deep water, we see a huge lake separated from the flooded street by just a simple metal railing. Those sharing the video claimed this was recent footage from Uttarakhand’s popular tourist destination Nainital. Hindustan Times also included this footage in its recent report on Uttarakhand floods. On Twitter, people shared the video with captions like, “#Nainital Lake yesterday.” AFWA’s investigation found that while this video is from Nainital, it is not recent. At the time of writing this report, the situation in Nainital was completely normal. AFWA Probe The first thing we noticed was that several people on social media commented that this video was old. Upon comparing the viral video with this one, the similarities were more than evident. This proved that the video was not recent. On Facebook, the Nainital police also shared screenshots of this video and called it old. “Currently, the water level of the Naini lake and the condition of the Mall road is totally normal. Strict action will be taken against the people sharing such old videos,” the Facebook post said. India Today’s Nainital correspondent Lila Singh Bisht also confirmed that this video was a year old. He told us that it was taken from outside the Army Holiday Home hotel of Nainital. He shot and sent to us a current video captured from the same spot. However, according to a September 19 Times of India report, three persons were killed and several were injured amid heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand's Kumaon region.
