  • Fact Check: Photos of crashed chopper that killed Bipin Rawat passed off as Nepal plane wreckage A photo, that went viral following plane crash in Nepal, is from the chopper crash that killed India's Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat in December 2021. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This photo is from the chopper crash that killed India's Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Bipin Rawat in December 2021 near Coonoor, TN. In Nepal, Tara Air’s twin-engine aircraft 9NAET went missing after taking off from Pokhara airport on May 29 morning. The plane carrying 19 passengers and three crew members was headed for Jomsom, a popular tourist destination. Per reports, the flight that normally takes about 30 minutes went down in bad weather. All passengers on board the aircraft are feared dead, Phadindra Mani Pokhrel, Spokesperson, Home Ministry in Nepal told reporters. "Our preliminary assessment shows that no one could have survived the plane crash, but the official statement is due," Pokhrel said. Amid this, an image of wreckage has been circulating claiming to be of the crashed Tara Air flight. Many on Facebook shared this photo, condoling the disastrous incident. The India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that the viral photo is from the chopper crash that killed India’s Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat in December 2021 near Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor. The viral posts are archived here and here. AFWA Probe A reverse image search led us to several mainstream news websites that published this photo. Per these reports, the photo was from the wreckage of the chopper that crashed in December 2021, killing CDS Bipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 others. This viral image was published by Outlook on December 15, 2021, with the caption, “Wreckage of crashed IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter in Tamil Nadu Coonoor.” The image was credited to the Press Trust of India. India Today also published the same image last year with a similar image caption, “Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 11 other persons who were on board IAF’s Mi-17V5 chopper died after it crashed near Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor on Wednesday.” At the time of writing this, rescue workers in Nepal had recovered 21 bodies from the crash site. A spokesperson of Tara Air Sudarshan Bartaula told the media that the bodies were “scattered over a 100-metre radius from the main impact point,” and that they were in an "unrecognisable condition". However, it is clear that the photo being shared is not from this wreckage. Rather it was the chopper crash in December 2021 that killed General Bipin Rawat, his wife, and others.
