| - A rumor that U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., collected her dead grandmother's Social Security checks for almost 10 years circulated online in February 2025.
For example, the America's Last Line of Defense Facebook page posted a meme on Feb. 20 that said, "Ilhan Omar has been collecting her dead grandmother's $2,308 Social Security check for almost 10 years. No wonder they're so opposed to audits." The text caption of the post read, "She needs to be prosecuted and she needs to return that money now."
The same rumor also spread on a Facebook page named America - Love It Or Leave It, on AmericasBestPics.com, Reddit and Threads, and in a Facebook group named Massachusetts For Trump/Vance 2028 Campaign. (Despite the group's name, Trump remains ineligible for a third presidential term, per the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.)
Some readers seemed to interpret the rumor as a factual recounting of real-life events. However, there was no evidence of Omar collecting anyone's Social Security checks.
Rather, the owner of the America's Last Line of Defense network of Facebook pages and websites described its content as "satire." The meme itself displayed a label reading "S" for satire, as well as the words, "Nothing on this page is real." The network's Facebook pages, America's Last Line of Defense and America - Love It Or Leave It, both also featured similar disclaimers in their bios.
Snopes has addressed similar satirical claims about Omar in the past, including the assertion that she made the remark, "If Israel is so innocent, then why do they insist on being Jews?" and a rumor that she hosted a flag-burning party.
For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources calling their output humorous or satirical.
