  • Last Updated on July 3, 2024 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A Facebook post claims that a particular herbal oil can treat hydrocele effectively. We did the fact check to term it as False. The Claim According to a Facebook post, a herbal Ayurvedic oil can treat hydrocele. The video claims to have cured 1,00,000+ people already. The product is made up of natural plant extracts, has no side effects, enhances libido and endurance strength. Fact Check What is hydrocele? Hydrocele occurs when fluid accumulates around the testicles, causing noticeable swelling in the scrotum. This condition commonly affects newborns but can also impact adult males (mostly in males over 40). Preterm babies are at a greater risk of developing hydrocele. Generally the symptoms include painless swelling of the scrotum, a feeling of heaviness, and general discomfort. In many cases, inflammation or injury within the scrotum leads to the development of hydrocele. However, the condition can also result from underlying issues such as infections or tumours. To reduce the risk of developing hydrocele, it is important to maintain proper genital hygiene and seek timely medical attention for any scrotal injuries. Even when preventive measures are somewhat limited, these steps can help minimise the risk. What does the product page say? The product page is quite suspicious. It does not provide a full list of ingredients, only listing key ones such as Haldi (turmeric) powder, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root powder, Neem (Azadirachta indica) oil, Aloe vera gel, Sesame (Sesamum indicum) oil, Peppermint (Mentha piperita) oil, Lavender (Lavandula) oil, and Ginger (Zingiber officinale) extract. For some ingredients it mentions the scientific name, while for few others it does not. This again raises concerns. It uses the Hinglish language, not English or Hindi. The arbitrary use of Hindi and English, makes the website look unprofessional. The product claims to be 100% herbal, Ayurvedic, and natural. It also asserts that it can stop infections, soothe the skin, and prevent infections from recurring. However, there is no evidence supporting the claim that it has effectively treated over 100,000 people. There is also no proof of clinical efficacy. The price listed is ₹999, discounted to ₹599, but the same product is found on Meesho for only ₹189, raising questions about its authenticity and value. Additionally, when attempting to verify the shopping site linked from the Facebook page, a warning about potential cybersecurity risks appeared. This casts further doubt on its legitimacy. Here is a screenshot of the warning: Can a herbal Ayurvedic oil treat hydrocele effectively? No, there is no scientific evidence that herbal Ayurvedic oil can treat hydrocele effectively. The product claims to be made from natural ingredients known for their health benefits. But, there is no clinical proof that these ingredients can cure hydrocele. In cases where the hydrocele resolves on its own, it may give a wrong idea that it got treated by using the herbal oil instead or self resolution. Treatments for hydrocele usually involve watchful waiting or surgical intervention in persistent or severe cases. What oil is good for hydrocele? Traditionally, castor oil often serves as a beneficial remedy for hydrocele due to its anti-inflammatory properties. However, its effectiveness is not scientifically proven, and it is not considered a mainstream medical treatment. What does an expert say? We reached out to Dr Dhruv J. Parmar, MBBS, DPM (Psychology), FPSM, serves as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Sexologist at Mananjay Neuropsychiatric Care Centre in Valsad, Gujarat for his expert take on this topic. He says, “In mild cases, castor oil can help reduce inflammation and swelling, but it is not foolproof. In severe cases, surgery is required.” Can hydrocele resolve itself? Yes, hydroceles can sometimes resolve on their own, particularly in infants. In adults, hydrocele might not necessarily require treatment unless it causes discomfort or leads to complications. However, it is always advisable to seek medical advice to rule out other underlying conditions. How long does hydrocele last? In infants, hydroceles often disappear without treatment within the first year of life. For adults, the duration can vary. Some hydroceles might resolve on their own over time, while others may persist and require medical intervention. What is the best treatment for hydrocele? The best treatment for hydrocele depends on its severity and the underlying cause. Observation is often recommended for asymptomatic cases (showing no symptoms). If the hydrocele is large or symptomatic, aspiration or surgical procedures like hydrocelectomy may be performed to remove the fluid and prevent recurrence. Consulting a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan is essential. Conclusion The claim that a herbal oil can treat hydrocele is false. Some traditional or natural methods may offer general health benefits. But, there is no scientific evidence to support the efficacy of such treatments for hydrocele. Medical consultation and evidence-based treatments remain the best approach for managing this condition.
