Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we conducted a reverse image search to trace the source of the image. Our investigation revealed that the picture was captured from an episode of the show ‘What Women Want’, hosted by Kareena Kapoor. We found the full episode on the Youtube channel Mirchi Plus, uploaded on November 8, 2024, with the caption, “Shreya Ghoshal Interview by Kareena Kapoor Khan on What Women Want S5 (EP- 5).”
After watching the entire video, we discovered that at no point during the interview did Shreya Ghoshal have any black and blue marks around her eye. In this episode, she discussed her music journey, career milestones, and behind-the-scenes stories.
To verify her health status, we conducted a keyword search for any credible news report. Our investigation yielded no credible reports suggesting any health concerns. Given Ghoshal’s status as a prominent celebrity, any significant health news about her would have been widely covered by the media.
Next, we checked her social media accounts and found an Insta story updated 22 hours ago and a reel uploaded 2 hours ago, indicating she is active and well.
For further verification, we contacted Smita Srivastava, an entertainment journalist at Dainik Jagran. She confirmed that there have been no reports regarding Shreya Ghoshal’s health issues and this image is edited.
We also investigated the link shared with the post, which led to a 404 error. We contacted Ayush Bhardwaj, cyber security expert and former IT advisor to the Public Grievances Committee, Government of Rajasthan, regarding this picture. He explained, “Any user should first go through the message and the accompanying URL properly. The easiest way to hack someone is by sending malicious links with lucrative offers or clickbait headlines. This is a type of social engineering where users are instigated to click on links containing viruses. After this, the virus is installed in the user’s mobile and they can be cheated. Keep these points in mind to keep yourself safe from such scams:
• Never click on an unknown link
• Keep your browser updated
• Never click on short URLs or links with attractive offers
• Always have two-way authentication enabled on your WhatsApp and social media accounts.
• Do not click on any links in messages from unknown senders.”
Finally, we scanned the Facebook account of the user ‘James Howlett who shared the picture with the false claim, and found that the user has over 50 followers.
Conclusion: A viral photo of singer Shreya Ghoshal with a black-and-blue mark around her eye falsely claims that she passed away. Our investigation revealed the image was edited, and Shreya is in good health.
