  • Last Updated on January 14, 2022 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A viral post on social media shows cigarette packet warning labels dated December 2021 and January 2022 claim that smoking can cause blood clots, heart attacks and early deaths among children and non-smoking adults. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False. The Claim “WARNING. Tobacco smoke contains a toxic mix of chemicals that cause disease and early death in children and non-smoking adults exposed to the smoke”, claims the cigarette packet warning label dated Dec 2021. Another cigarette packet warning label dated Jan 2022 claims, “WARNING. Inhaling even small amounts of the toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke can trigger sudden blood clots, heart attacks and strokes”. The images can be seen here, here and here. A social media user replies by claiming that “Expert say post-pandemic stress disorder could lead to rise in heart disease.” The post can be found here. Fact Check Are the quotes in the images of tobacco packaging new? No. Both the quotes attributed to December 2021 and January 2022 are not new. They are available in the Competition and Consumer (Tobacco) Information Standard report released by the Australian Government in the year 2011. Is the connection between heart attacks and smoking a new discovery? No. The World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that tobacco is the biggest threat to public health and is killing more than 8 million people every year. The WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic can be seen here. Moreover, various studies in the past have confirmed that smoking can cause cardiovascular disease even in non-smokers. Some studies can be found here, here, here, and here. Is Covid vaccine responsible for post pandemic stress disorder? No, there is no evidence which shows that post pandemic stress disorder is caused by Covid-19 vaccine. The Healthy Indian Project (THIP Media) has discussed Covid-19 vaccines not responsible for post pandemic stress disorder in detail here.
