  • Fact Check: This video of Trump promising to get Imran Khan out of jail is a DEEPFAKE India Today Fact Check found that the viral video was made using a 2017 interview with NBC News. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is a deepfake, made using a 2017 video interview of Trump with NBC News. Following his presidential victory, Donald Trump delivered a speech in Florida, thanking people for a powerful mandate and assuring his supporters he would fulfil his poll promises. But did these promises include getting the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, out of jail and back to power? A video of Trump’s alleged promise to Khan’s supporters is currently viral on social media. In the clip, Trump can be heard saying, “Hello my Pakistani American friends, I promise if I win I will try my best to get Imran Khan out of jail as soon as possible. He is my friend. I love him. I will support him to take over the government again and rock and we will work together to make our ties stronger.” India Today Fact Check, however, found that this video is a deepfake. It was made using a 2017 video interview of Trump with NBC News anchor Lester Holt. OUR PROBE Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral clip led us to an NBC News video report, dated March 12, 2017. In it, NBC News anchor Lester Holt interviewed Donald Trump about his decision to fire former FBI director James Comey. According to the Trump administration, Comey was fired over his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails. The Democratic Party, however, alleged that the former FBI director was fired because the agency was investigating alleged links between the Trump campaign and Russia. In the NBC interview, the movement of Trump’s eyelids and lips match the viral clip around the 12-minute-30-second mark. In the original video, Trump was then speaking about his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, one day after firing Comey. A comparison between the two clips can be seen below. A repository of deepfakes While reverse-searching keyframes from the video, we found multiple clips of Trump, in the same attire and background, shared before the US Presidential elections. In one such video, Trump made sensational confessions about the January 6, 2021, United States Capitol attack and his assassination attempt. Its caption mentioned that the video was made using AI. Another such video was uploaded to YouTube in March 2024. In this clip as well, Trump’s suit and the background match the viral clip, but this time he could be seen promoting a YouTube channel. It is noteworthy that both videos contained a logo of Parrot AI, an AI Voice Generator that can generate deepfake videos of several celebrities and politicians. We also used this tool to create a deepfake of Trump. The resulting clip showed Trump in the same attire and background, speaking the lines we fed into the tool. The video can be seen below. It is thus, clear that a 2017 video of Trump’s interview with NBC was used to create this deepfake video of Trump talking about Imran Khan.
