  • Fact Check: Mount K(AI)lash! This stunning video is AI-generated A Tibet-based artist duo made this video of Mount Kailash surrounded by lenticular clouds using Midjourney. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video of Mount Kailash was made using Midjourney by Tibet-based artists. A stunning video that’s been widely shared purports to show Mount Kailash — the striking peak in the south-west corner of Tibet in the Himalayan Mountains — covered by lenticular clouds. Some called it the “raw power of nature in action”, while others called it the fury of the Hindu god Shiva, who is believed to reside there. One person shared the video on Instagram, writing, “Mount Kailash, the king of sacred mountains, who see it can make a wish. Feel the awe-inspiring majesty and serenity of Mount Kailash. Mount Kailash will offer a profound purification of the soul.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this video was made with Midjourney by Tibet-based artists, who have made several such videos of Mount Kailash using AI. OUR PROBE Reverse searching keyframes from the viral video led us to the same video shared by an Instagram account named “Pure Tibetan” on June 28. On this account, we found several other videos of Mount Kailash, similarly showing surreal lenticular clouds all around it. We then found a website called “Kailash Energy” hyperlinked in the bio section of this Instagram account. According to it, this website was based in Ngari Prefecture of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. It sells Tibetan crystals, gemstones, souvenirs, and accessories such as necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, etc. We then contacted the people running this Instagram account -- Sonam and Namgyal, a Tibet-based artist duo. They told us that they aimed to share the supernatural and majestic phenomena of Mount Kailash with the help of AI. They shot the photo of Mount Kailash and then edited it using Midjourney. Lenticular clouds are rare lens-shaped or saucer-shaped clouds, which typically arise from powerful winds at high altitudes, often near mountain ranges. This cloud formation has reportedly been spotted before over mountains in Sichuan, Turkey and over Japan’s Mount Fuji. Thus, it is clear that the video of Mount Kailash, surrounded by lenticular clouds, was made using AI. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
