OUR PROBE
Reverse searching keyframes from the viral video led us to the same video shared by an Instagram account named “Pure Tibetan” on June 28. On this account, we found several other videos of Mount Kailash, similarly showing surreal lenticular clouds all around it.
We then found a website called “Kailash Energy” hyperlinked in the bio section of this Instagram account. According to it, this website was based in Ngari Prefecture of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. It sells Tibetan crystals, gemstones, souvenirs, and accessories such as necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, etc.
We then contacted the people running this Instagram account -- Sonam and Namgyal, a Tibet-based artist duo. They told us that they aimed to share the supernatural and majestic phenomena of Mount Kailash with the help of AI. They shot the photo of Mount Kailash and then edited it using Midjourney.
Lenticular clouds are rare lens-shaped or saucer-shaped clouds, which typically arise from powerful winds at high altitudes, often near mountain ranges. This cloud formation has reportedly been spotted before over mountains in Sichuan, Turkey and over Japan’s Mount Fuji.
Thus, it is clear that the video of Mount Kailash, surrounded by lenticular clouds, was made using AI.
