  • Fact Check: Old video of public flogging of woman in Afghanistan viral as recent incident An old video showcasing the flogging of a woman in Afghanistan has been making the rounds on social media. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is not recent. While it is from Afghanistan, it is at least four years old. Since Kabul’s sudden fall to the Taliban in August 2021, the fundamentalist group has imposed heavy restrictions on women. Regressive rules for women have now become the norm in Afghanistan. Incidents of gender-based violence have also risen steeply in the nation. With this in the backdrop, a video of a woman being publicly flogged has been making the rounds on social media. This video was shared with captions like, “This video was taken yesterday, I am not sure exact location! But here how terrorist #Taliban are publicly flogging a woman, while she is being beaten up by few men, you can hear (Allah ho Akabar) in the background! As disturbing as this video is, I can assure you worse things are.” The archived version of this tweet can be seen here. AFWA found that the video is not recent. We could trace the video back to as early as 2018. AFWA PROBE We ran a reverse search of the viral video’s screengrabs. This led us to a video uploaded on February 5, 2018, to the official YouTube channel of Ariana news, a private television network based in Kabul, Afghanistan. The video’s title read in Persian, 'Soraya: My mother slandered me / Police arrested 7 people on charges of Soraya field court'. As per the video’s description, a woman called Soraya was beaten by her relatives in the Chah Ab district in the Takhar province. The woman claims that she had not committed any crime. Takhar police later reportedly arrested seven people for trying her in a kangaroo court and punishing her. We also found the same video on the website of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The video story was titled “Video Shows Mob Beating Afghan Woman” and was published on February 2, 2018. As per the story, witnesses said the attack took place after clerics issued a fatwa calling for the woman to be punished for an extramarital affair. Thus, it is clear that the video of the public flogging is at least four years old and not recent at all. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
