Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video has been on the internet since February 2022 at least. According to media reports, it was from the 2022 Municipal Elections in West Bengal. Voting for the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly elections took place on December 1, 2022. While political parties have already started campaigning for phase two of the polls, a video of a man allegedly committing voting fraud in Gujarat has been circulated widely on social media. In the video, a man standing near an electronic voting machine (EVM) allegedly stopped voters and cast votes on their behalf. The archived link of a similar post can be seen here. AFWA’s investigation found that the video has been on the internet since February 2022 at least. At the time, the West Bengal Municipal Elections were on and this video was reported to be from the South Dum Dum municipality. AFWA PROBE In the video, people could be heard speaking in Bangla, hinting that it was likely shot in West Bengal and not Gujarat. Subsequently, upon reverse-searching the video’s keyframes, we found that the same video has been on the internet at least since February 27, 2022. It was uploaded to the official Facebook page of CPIM West Bengal on February 27. Per the caption provided by the page, the video showed voter fraud happening in booth number 108 in the Lakeview School of Ward 33 in South Dum Dum. Around the same time, this video was also tweeted by the Twitter accounts of the Bharatiya Janata Party Bengal and West Bengal Congress, accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of committing election fraud. Elections were held for 108 municipalities in West Bengal on February 27. We also found this video carried by media outlets, including TV9 Bangla, on the same date. Per these reports as well, the video was from municipal elections in South Dum Dum. The video was earlier fact-checked by Factly when it was circulated with claims that it was from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in March 2022. While we couldn’t independently verify whether the video is from South Dum Dum, it is evident that the video is months old and not related to the ongoing Gujarat Assembly elections 2022.
