Quick Take
A social media post claims that Yale University researchers have created an intranasal mode of COVID vaccinations and the conspiracy theorists should be concerned about what is being sprayed in the pesky Chemtrails. We fact-checked and found this claim to be False.
The Claim
An Instagram post reads, “Researchers at Yale University have created a new airborne method of delivery for mRNA vaccines. They claim their tests were able to successfully vaccinate mice intranasally – without any injections.”
Further down in the post, it claims, “I guess the conspiracy theorists have a right to be concerned what’s being sprayed in those pesky ‘Chemtrails.’”
Fact Check
What are chemtrails?
Chemtrails are a conspiracy theory that claims that long-lasting condensation trails (contrails) left in the sky by high-flying aircraft are actually “chemtrails” consisting of chemical or biological agents, sprayed for nefarious purposes undisclosed to the general public. Believers in this conspiracy theory say that while normal contrails dissipate relatively quickly, contrails that linger must contain additional substances. It’s important to note that there is no credible scientific evidence to support these conspiracy theories. The scientific community widely dismisses the idea of “chemtrails” as a baseless and unfounded conspiracy theory. It can’t be stated without research if chemtrails exist and even if they do, whether they are harmful to humans.
Is covid vaccine being sprayed through chemtrails?
No. There is no credible information or evidence to suggest that COVID-19 vaccines are being sprayed through chemtrails or any other unconventional means of administration. COVID-19 vaccines are administered through established and regulated methods, primarily through intramuscular injections. The development and distribution of vaccines are highly regulated processes involving rigorous testing for safety and efficacy.
Even though it is true that researchers at Yale University have developed an mRNA COVID vaccine which is inhalable. But, the intranasal COVID-19 vaccine developed is still in the early stages of development, and it has not yet been tested in humans. It is also important to note that the vaccine was administered directly to the nasal passages of the mice, which is not the same as spraying it from the sky.
Another vaccine which is developed to be used intranasal passage is BBV154 by Bharat Biotech also showed protected efficacy in animals. However, the government of India has restricted its use in emergency situations in the age group of 18 and above.
Is it practically possible to spray covid-vaccines through airplanes?
No. Spraying COVID-19 vaccines through airplanes is not practically possible. Even if the intranasal COVID-19 vaccine is eventually approved for use in humans globally, it is unlikely to be sprayed from the sky. Vaccines are delicate biological products that need to be stored and transported under carefully controlled conditions. mRNA is both extremely labile and rapidly degraded in unfavourable environments. Spraying a vaccine from an airplane would expose it to harsh environmental conditions that could damage it. Also, spraying a vaccine from airplanes is not feasible or ethical. It would be difficult to ensure that everyone on the ground received an effective dose of the vaccine as the amount of vaccine that reaches the ground would depend on a number of factors, such as the wind speed and direction, the altitude of the plane, and the size of the droplets., and there is also the risk of exposing people to allergic reactions or other side effects.
THIP Media has previously fact-checked misinformation around COVID-19 vaccines, such as COVID-19 vaccines are a weapon of mass destruction, COVID-19 vaccines are responsible for RSV cases, etc.
