  • Fact Check: Did Alia Bhatt perform at Met Gala afterparty? 2017 video viral again with dubious claim A video showing Alia Bhatt's performance during the 2017 IIFA Awards ceremony is going viral with the claim that it shows the Bollywood actor performing at the 2023 Met Gala afterparty. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows Bhatt’s performance at the 2017 IIFA Awards. Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt made her grand Met Gala debut on May 1, 2023, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. She wore a white dress adorned with one lakh pearls designed by fashion designer Prabal Gurung, who attended the event along with her. Following this event, a video featuring the “Gangubai Kathiawadi” actor made the rounds on social media. In it, Bhatt could be on stage, seen wearing a pink top and blue jeans, rapping the popular song “Kar Gayi Chull” from her 2016 film “Kapoor & Sons”. Background dancers behind her were dressed in black and neon green. Sharing the video, one person tweeted, "Alia Bhatt performing at the Met Gala afterparty." The archived version of the tweet can be seen here. India Today’s investigation, however, found that the video is not related to the Met Gala at all. It shows Alia Bhatt's performance during the 2017 IIFA Awards ceremony. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the video led us to the verified Facebook page of the International Indian Film Academy or IIFA. We found a 54-second-long similar clip shared there on June 11, 2018, with the caption, “Alia Bhatt - IIFA 2017”. In this video, Bhatt could be seen in the same attire with the same background dancers, grooving to various songs, including the one in the viral clip. However, in this video, she couldn’t be heard rapping. A further search led us to a video news story published on News18's Facebook page on January 5, 2023. We found the viral video there, with a caption that read, "Alia Bhatt Rapping at Old IIFA Awards Gets Brutally Roasted". The description of the video also stated that this was Bhatt’s performance at the 2017 IIFA Awards. Many media outlets like MensXP, iDiva also reported on this 2017 performance. We found a video posted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Instagram. The caption on the post read, "Art imitating life or life imitating art? Did you know: During the Met Gala, guests are invited to explore the Costume Institute exhibition - this year that's ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,’ on view through July 15." In that video, Alia Bhatt can be seen checking out the exhibit along with designer Prabal Gurung. It’s been reported that Bhatt may have skipped the Met Gala Afterparty and returned to India. Apart from Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Isha Ambani, and Natasha Poonawalla attended the prestigious event. However, we couldn't find any news reports on these celebrities performing at the Met Gala afterparty. Thus, it is safe to conclude that the viral video is not Alia Bhatt's performance at the Met Gala afterparty. The video shows her performance at IIFA Awards 2017.
