  • Fact Check: This video of man jumping from building is from Turkey, but it's not related to Feb 6 earthquake While the video is from Turkey, it is a few months old, and thus, unrelated to the devastating earthquake on February 6. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from November 23, 2022, and was recorded in the Turkish city of Düzce during a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria early on February 6 morning. According to reports, at least 641 people were killed during the natural disaster, and the number is expected to rise with hundreds of people still believed to be trapped under rubble. Following this, a disturbing video of a man plummeting into the road from a height was widely shared. In the CCTV footage that’s about 21 seconds long, several people ran for their lives, when a man dropped to the ground from what appears to be a considerable height. This video was shared by many claiming that this person was from Turkey and he jumped out of a high-rise during the recent earthquake, fearing it would collapse. An archived version of such a claim can be seen here. AFWA found that while the video is from Turkey, it is a few months old, and thus, unrelated to the devastating earthquake on February 6. AFWA PROBE While reverse-searching keyframes from the viral clip, we came across the same CCTV footage in a DailyMotion video on MSN from 2022. The Turkish caption alongside this video roughly translated to: "A person was injured when he jumped from the balcony for fear of an earthquake." Considering that the video was shared in 2022, it could not have been related to the recent earthquake in Turkey. Subsequently, we searched with relevant Turkish keywords and came across the same video in multiple media reports published in November 2022. A report by Independent Turkey from November 23, 2022, featured the same video. As per this report, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Turkish city of D¼zce on November 23, 2022, around 4 am local time. Reportedly, the name of the person seen falling in the video was aÄdaŞ Laçin. He jumped from the 3rd floor of his apartment and consequently, suffered two broken arms. No casualties or major devastation was reported after these tremours. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that this video has nothing to do with the devastating February 6 quake in Turkey.
