India Today Fact Check
This video shot ahead of the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls was cut out of context.
A day before the May 10 by-election in Punjab’s Jalandhar, a video of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal, allegedly soliciting votes for the Congress party, has been shared by some on social media. In the video, Kejriwal can be seen saying, "In this election, do not vote for the BJP or the Shiromani Akali Dal. All must vote for Congress."
Sharing the video, one person tweeted in Hindi, "National President of the Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal set an example for opposition unity. Despite his own party and chief minister in the state, he appealed to people to vote for Congress in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election.” The archived version of such posts can be seen here and here.
India Today Fact Check's investigation found that the viral video is almost six years old and also doctored. The original video was shot by Kejriwal during the Punjab Assembly elections in 2017.
Our Probe
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to Kejriwal's official Facebook page, which contained the extended version of the clip, shared on January 30, 2017, before the Punjab Assembly elections. The post read, "RSS and Akali Dal have started transferring their votes in favour of Congress".
In that video, Kejriwal said, "It is being reported for the past two days that Akali Dal and RSS men are going door-to-door and appealing to people that in this election do not vote for BJP or Shiromani Akali Dal. All must vote for Congress. RSS and Akali Dal have started shifting their votes in favour of Congress. Now it is apparent that they all are the same. They all have only one intention - they do not want the Aam Aadmi Party to win. Because they know that if the Aam Aadmi Party comes to power, then all the files will be opened. They will be in jail and all the corruption will be exposed."
This proved that the video being shared was cut out of context. On February 2, 2017, Kejriwal went live on his official Facebook page and clarified that he never appealed to anyone to vote for Congress, adding that a doctored clip was being shared.
While he did not share the link to this doctored video, his words suggest it was the same video that is being shared now. It’s also noteworthy that the same clip went viral right before the Delhi Assembly polls in 2020 as well. India Today had debunked it at the time.
Thus, it is very clear that the viral video has been cut out of context and has nothing to do with Jalandhar's by-election.
