  • Fact Check: 2016 video of England fans mocking children FALSELY shared as a FIFA World Cup 2022 incident A video surfaced on social media platforms after England faced Iran on November 21 at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar in the first match of the FIFA World Cup 2022. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral video has no relation to the FIFA World Cup 2022. This video is from France and was shot during UEFA Euro 2016. It showed England fans mocking migrant children outside a bar in Lille. In their very first FIFA World Cup 2022 match, England faced Iran on November 21 at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar. The English squad’s Bukayo Saka scored a twin, while Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford all scored one goal a piece, beating Iran 6-2. Videos of English fans celebrating this victory have been shared by thousands online. Alongside these celebratory videos, however, people also shared one disturbing clip that shows a group of people harassing four children. Those sharing the video claimed that English fans bullied local Qatari children after the match. One person who shared the video, wrote on Twitter, "I am at the #Qatar2022 fan zone and I have just witnessed #ENG supporters bully a small group of local children. They are seen throwing coins at their heads while chanting, ‘f*ck off ISIS, it's coming home.’ Dreadful scenes. #FIFAWorld Cup." The archived version of this post can be seen here. AFWA's investigation, however, found that this video was from France, shot during UEFA Euro 2016. Here, England’s fans were mocking migrant children outside a bar in Lille. AFWA PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to a June 2016 Reddit post titled “England fans accused of mocking refugee children in France as they pay one to down a pint and have others 'fight' over handfuls of coins.” It contained a Telegraph report from June 16, 2016. According to the report, drunk England fans were accused of mocking refugee children, aged between seven and nine, in France after paying one to drink alcohol and others to fight over handfuls of coins. Other news outlets like Mashable also reported the same. When we searched online, we also found several tweets from the time that contained the video. One such tweet read: "English fans are mocking gipsy children throwing them coins." According to a Mirror report from June 2016, this disturbing video was captured during the UEFA Euro 2016, outside a bar in Lille, France. The Washington Post also reported the same.
