Modi was wearing a traditional Khasi outfit along with a traditional Garo hat during his Meghalaya visit. The photo of the woman shared along with the post was digitally altered.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attires, especially some of the more exotic ones, have always made the news.
When Modi visited Shillong, Meghalaya on December 18 to inaugurate various projects, his outfit, once again, was at the centre of the coverage. The PM has always made his attires part of his political messaging, and this time, he wore a traditional Khasi outfit along with a traditional Garo hat to show his respect for both the main tribes of the state.
Of course, Modi’s outfits have also often been the object of mockery by his critics. So, following the Meghalaya visit, people started sharing a photo that supposedly showed the listing of Modi’s attire on an e-commerce platform.
To add to the mockery, those sharing the photo suggested that Modi wore a women’s outfit. These posts juxtaposed a photo of Modi in the aforementioned attire with a similar-looking dress that cost $35. It also contained the description, “Multi Floral Embroidered Dress.”
The archived versions of similar posts can be seen here and here.
AFWA’s investigation found that this photo was digitally altered. The dress listed on the clothing website was digitally replaced with Modi’s attire to falsely imply Modi wore women’s clothing.
AFWA probe
We found several people reacting to the tweets claiming the image of the woman was digitally altered.
We noticed multiple creases on the outfit worn by Modi in the viral photo. Identical creases could be seen on the listed dress as well. The dress in the latter photo also had blurry edges, hinting at some digital alterations.
A search for “Multi Floral Embroidered Dress” on Google led us to the website for Shoreline Wear, a company that has its registered offices in the US but claims to manufacture “products from competitive Asian markets.”
The product that we found was a black dress with floral embroidery that cost $35. When we compared the photo on the website with the viral image, we found that the original product’s neckline was visible in the viral photo.
Thus, we concluded that the attire in Modi’s photo was cut and added to this product digitally.
It’s noteworthy that following Modi’s Shillong visit, former cricketer and Trinamool Congress leader Kirti Azad mocked the PM, saying that he was “neither male nor female”. This comment earned Azad a lot of flak, who then said that he did not intend to disrespect the attire and was only commenting on Modi's “fashion”.
