  • A video showing police charging at people has gone viral to claim that it shows comedian Samay Raina and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia being taken into custody from their residence. The claim comes after a controversy arose regarding alleged inappropriate remarks by Allahbadia during the show India’s Got Latent, which is hosted by Raina. (Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.) Is the claim true?: The claim is false. The video is old from 2023 and shows a fight over parking space in a Greater Noida housing complex. The Supreme Court provided Allahbadia with arrest protection, whereas the Maharashtra Cyber Cell rejected Raina’s petition to give his statement remotely. There are no reports confirming their arrest at home. What we found: At first, we checked about the updates in the cases filed against Allahbadia and Raina. The SC granted the podcaster an interim protection from arrest order against all First Information Reports (FIR) filed against him in various states, reported the Times of India. As for Raina, the Maharastra Cyber Cell rejected his plea to record his statement via a video call, as the comedian is in the United States of America (USA) till 17 March, reported the Economic Times. There were no reports which suggested that the two were arrested from their homes. We, then, checked the video footage by dividing it into multiple screenshots and running a Google reverse image search on some of them. The reverse image search results led us to a report by the Times of India from August 2023, where the cover video matched the frames of the viral clip. As per the report, a fight broke out between two groups over parking space in a Greater Noida society. The fight escalated and the police registered a case against two individuals for allegedly disturbing official work. Similarly, NDTV and India Today also reported on the incident in August 2023. They noted that the police were investigating the case. Conclusion: A false claim has gone viral that the video shows police arresting Allahbadia and Raina.
