  • Last Updated on June 7, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take Several social media users have shared a screenshot of The New Zealand Herald newspaper that claims the New Zealand government is planning to put Covid-19 vaccines in the water supply. We fact checked and found the claim to be False. The Claim The screenshot of The New Zealand Herald post states, “The emails between Government officials and multiple local councils appear to discuss the possibility of introducing the Covid vaccine into city water supplies in areas where the vaccination rates haven’t reached 90%”. Referring to the post, a Twitter user wrote, “if people don’t cut the head of the snake they’ll be adding mRNA to the tap water… and then the food…”. Similar Twitter posts are available here and here. A Facebook user wrote, “If this is true in NZ, they are probably doing it here in Australia too. We know for a fact that our water is filled with nasty ingredients”. Another similar Facebook post is available here. The screenshot of the post is available down-below. Fact Check Is New Zealand planning to put Covid-19 vaccines in the water supply? No. The New Zealand government never published any press release that confirms the release of the Covid-19 vaccine in the water supply. Moreover, it seems the post has been skewed to spread misinformation in the name of the New Zealand Herald newspaper. We are unable to find the post in the screenshot on all the official social media accounts of the New Zealand Herald newspaper. Is it possible to introduce the vaccine into the water supply? No. Vaccines are injected directly into the skin and cannot be introduced into the water supply. Injecting a vaccine into the vein provides a rapid antibody response against the antigen within the body. Research has shown that vaccines contain weak or inactive parts of the antigen that do not cause disease in the person receiving the vaccine but induce the immune system to generate a natural immune response against the antigen. The contents of the vaccine can be introduced only intravenously, not through the stomach. Moreover, vaccines cannot be mixed with water because they need to be stored at a proper temperature from the time they are manufactured till they are administered. The potency of the vaccine reduces every time the vaccine is stored at improper temperature. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website has released a vaccine storage and handling toolkit that consists of proper guidelines on preventing useless vaccine supply.
