  • Last Updated on September 20, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media post claims that by wearing a type of shapewear one can reduce buttock acne, make the skin firm and elastic and reduce belly fat. We fact-checked and found this claim to be False. The Claim The caption of a Facebook post reads, “ In just 3 weeks of wearing it, I could already feel significant results, especially when showering. The acne on my buttocks has reduced, and the loose skin has become firm and elastic. The excess fat on my belly has noticeably disappeared. It has truly transformed my silhouette, effectively enhancing and shaping my figure, making me look more toned. It has also helped reduce the appearance of stretch marks, providing remarkable benefits. So far, the progress I’ve made has brought me immense joy and satisfaction.” The video reached around 289k views until we last checked. Fact Check What is the use of a shapewear? Shapewear is a type of undergarment which is designed to shape and contour the body. It claims to provide a smoother, more streamlined appearance. Its main purpose is to enhance and support the body’s natural shape, creating a slimmer and more toned silhouette. Usually, it is made from elastic materials such as nylon, spandex, or Lycra, which offer a snug and firm fit. Does wearing shapewear affect skin issues? There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that wearing a shapewear can reduce buttock acne, tighten the skin, or reduce fat. In fact, some experts believe that wearing shapewear can actually make these problems worse and can cause other problems such as slowing free motion of the gastrointestinal system and trapping the gas inside. On redirecting to the link, we reached an e-commerce website which sells this shapewear called, “New Version Baicloud™ Original Ice Silk Ion Fiber Repair Shaping Device” which claims to have multiple effects, such as reducing buttock acne and fat and tightening the skin. Let’s understand if this is possible, one by one. Does a shapewear help in skin tightening? While shapewear may offer some level of compression and support, it is unlikely to have a direct impact on reducing buttock acne or tightening the skin. Shapewear does not have the ability to tighten loose or sagging skin. Skin tightening is a complex process that involves the production of collagen and elastin. It often requires medical or cosmetic procedures, such as laser treatments, radiofrequency therapy, or surgical interventions. There is a lack of evidence in proving that wearing shapewear can increase collagen or elastin production, or that it can tighten the skin in any way. In fact, some experts believe that wearing shapewear can actually hamper the skin over time. Does a shapewear help in buttock acne? Buttock acne is caused by several factors, such as clogged hair follicles, excess oil production, and bacteria. In fact, wearing shapewear or such tight clothing can trap heat and moisture, which can create an environment that is ideal for acne-causing bacteria or yeast infections to thrive. Additionally, the tight fabric of shapewear can irritate the skin and make acne worse. Shapewear typically covers the buttock area, and prolonged use of tight-fitting garments may potentially increase sweating and trap moisture, which could exacerbate acne or other skin conditions. In order to prevent or treat buttock acne, it is generally recommended to maintain good hygiene practices, wear breathable clothing, and consult with a dermatologist for appropriate treatment options. Lastly, reducing fat is a complex process that involves diet and exercise. There is no evidence that wearing shapewear can help to reduce fat. In fact, wearing shapewear can actually make it harder to lose weight, as it can restrict movement and make it difficult to exercise. While shapewear can provide temporary contouring and slimming effects by redistributing fat, it does not lead to permanent fat reduction. Shapewear compresses and reshapes the body, giving the appearance of a slimmer figure under clothing. However, it does not actively target or eliminate fat cells. Long-term fat reduction is best achieved through a combination of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle changes. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional in order to help with any of the conditions and not blindly follow what has been advertised on the internet. THIP Media fact checked some other advertising claims like using wax cleaner toolsets to clean a baby’s ear. These kind of advertisement can be harmful for health.
