  • False: This drone show video celebrating Lunar New Year in Singapore was manipulated A day after the Lunar New Year’s Day, which fell on Feb. 10 this year, a video showing an elaborate blinking red-tailed dragon drone show began circulating online. It was widely shared with a claim that the spectacular show made up of drone lights was held at Marina Bay in Singapore. One Weibo user said “1,500 drones” were used to display the dragon gliding over the city’s skyline above the buildings. The same clip and claim can be found on YouTube and TikTok in different languages, such as English, Japanese, German, Dutch, and Chinese. At the time of writing, they garnered a combined engagement of 360,000 likes and 15000 shares. However, Annie Lab found that this video has been manipulated. While Singapore held the Legend of the Dragon Gate drone light show at Marina Bay during the Lunar New Year, the viral video shared on social media does not show the dragon that appeared in the event. The show in Singapore actually featured a drone dragon lit in blue, green and yellow, according to videos from local media whereas the one in the viral post is made up of red and white lights. Our investigation revealed that this red-tailed dragon was digitally added to the Singapore video from another footage depicting a drone light show held at Longhua in Shenzhen, China, during the 2023 Dragon Boat Festival. Origin of the drone dragon Below is the comparison between the manipulated video showing Marina Bay in Singapore and the original source of the drone light dragon in Shenzhen: The source of the drone dragon is likely a YouTube video posted in June 2023 by the Shenzhen DAMODA, a Chinese drone show company known for its flight control systems and formation technology. According to the company’s website, the show took place from June 18 to 20, 2023, in Longhua District Shenzhenmas part of the Shenzhen Dragon Boat Culture and Art Festival. A self-media account on Sohu News and Huanqiu.com, which is the online version of the state-owned Global Times, reported the event with related videos and pictures. We geolocated the area shown in the video to be near Shenzhen Longhua Sports Center and Zhongzhi Time Plaza. Singapore Drone Show By comparison, the dragon in the Singapore drone light show is different in colors and movements, as clearly shown by a video uploaded by broadcaster Channel News Asia. More videos of the shows from Singapore can be found here and here. The Legend of the Dragon Gate – Drone Show was held in Singapore during the Lunar New Year celebration this year. The 10-minute-long show was scheduled between Feb. 10 and 18, originally. But due to traffic, safety, and technical issue, the Feb.17 show was moved forward to Feb. 15, and the last show was cancelled “due to mechanical issues with the drone during scheduled pre-show testing.” Another manipulated video that claimed to show the same Singapore drone performance is debunked by Taiwan FactCheck Center, MyGoPen and HKBU Factcheck.
