  • Fact Check: Philippines earthquake was powerful, but this video is from Japan India Today Fact Check found that the video is from an earthquake in Japan in 2021 and is unrelated to the Philippines. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video, dated February 14, 2021, was captured in Chiba City, Japan, during the occurrence of a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in Fukushima. On the night of December 2, a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocked the Philippines, claiming one life and causing numerous injuries. In the aftermath, images and videos from affected areas began circulating on social media. In one such video, captured inside a bathroom in a high-rise building, foamy water splashes could be seen spilling out of a bathtub amid the intense tremors. While sharing this video on X, people asserted it was from the recent earthquakes in the Philippines. Others shared this clip on Facebook with captions like, "The Philippines was shaken near Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, by an earthquake of magnitude 7.5. Power can be seen by water spilling out of the tub." The archived version of such a post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is more than two years old and from Japan, unrelated to the Philippines earthquake. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a Ukrainian news report dated February 15, 2021, that featured similar screenshots. According to the report, this incident occurred on February 13, 2021, when a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Japan's Fukushima and Miyagi regions. The report states that the quake was also felt in Tokyo, and a woman uploaded the viral video on TikTok. A subsequent search using relevant keywords enabled us to locate one of the earliest versions of this video, uploaded to a YouTube channel on February 16, 2021. This made it clear that the video is unrelated to the recent earthquake in the Philippines. On February 23, 2021, Weather.com showcased this video, clarifying its origin in Chiba City, Japan, and confirming that it was recorded during the Fukushima earthquake. Additionally, on February 14, 2021, the BBC reported that despite the intense tremors in Tokyo, the weather department refrained from issuing a tsunami warning. Therefore, it is abundantly clear that an old and unrelated video from Japan was presented as a recent occurrence during the Philippines earthquake.
