  • Fact Check: Not Sharia! 2018 video from UP's Bulandshahr given FALSE communal twist This video from March 2018 shows a Hindu woman in UP's Bulandshahr being beaten up by her husband Shaudan Singh, for allegedly eloping with her neighbour. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video from March 2018 shows a Hindu woman in UP’s Bulandshahr being flogged by her husband Shaudan Singh for allegedly eloping with her neighbour. A video of a man flogging a bound woman with a large crowd surrounding them has been widely shared on social media. Allegedly, the man was administering punishment under Sharia, or Islamic religious laws. An X user wrote while sharing the video: “Under Sharia law, if a woman is raped, it’s considered sex outside of marriage, and she is to be punished. In most Sharia countries, women are stoned do death if they report they were raped. So the one in the video got ‘lucky’ for only being flogged.” India Today Fact Check found that the viral claims are misleading. This video from March 2018 shows a Hindu woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr being beaten up by her husband on the village panchayat’s orders. Our Probe Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video, we found multiple reports from March 2018 featuring screenshots of the clip. According to a Hindustan Times report published on March 22, 2018, this incident took place in the Launga village of Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district. A woman was tied to a tree and beaten mercilessly by multiple men for seven hours. Reportedly, she was flogged for allegedly eloping. Reports mentioned that the incident occurred on March 10, 2018, and the video went viral ten days later. The man in the green shirt seen beating the woman was her husband, Shaudan Singh. According to reports, Shaudan Singh was arrested by the police along with the village’s former pradhan Sher Singh and his son Shravan. This makes it clear that the accused are not Muslims. The accused had also molested the woman after beating her. According to these reports, the police said the panchayat came up with the punishment of flogging because they wanted to "teach the woman a lesson". Then Bulandshahr Superintendent of Police Praveen Ranjan Singh told the Hindustan Times that Sher Singh and his supporters convened a kangaroo court and ordered her public flogging. In her complaint to the police, the woman said that she ran away with her neighbour, Dharmendra Lodhi, on March 5, 2018. AajTak's Bulandshahr correspondent Mukul Sharma confirmed that the public flogging occurred on March 10, 2018, in Bulandshahr’s Launga village, which falls under the Sayana police station. He added that both the victim and the accused were Hindus. A report in Jansatta noted that police had filed an FIR against seven named and 12 unidentified persons. It is thus clear that this video does not show a rape victim being punished under Sharia. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
