These photos show the state of the Italian football team’s dressing room after its defeat against North Macedonia in March 2022 during a World Cup playoff semi-final match.
Costa Rica secured a 1-0 win over Japan on November 27, putting a dent in Japan’s hopes of reaching the 2022 FIFA World Cup’s last 16. Following this, a set of photos showing garbage scattered in a room has gone viral. Those sharing them said this was how the Japanese squad left its dressing room after suffering the defeat against Costa Rica. A Facebook user shared these photos with the caption, “Japan's dressing room after Costa Rica match”. The archived version of one such post can be seen here.
This came as a surprise to many, considering how Japanese football fans were praised in Qatar after they stayed behind following their team’s win over Germany and helped to clean up the Khalifa International Stadium. In fact, such a thing has been a trend with Japanese soccer fans. During the 2018 World Cup in Russia, following Japan’s loss against Belgium, the team’s fans did not let the defeat detract them from helping clean afterwards.
AFWA found that these photos are from March 2022 when the Italian football team had left its dressing room in a shabby condition after its defeat against North Macedonia in a World Cup play-off semifinal match.

When we reverse-searched the photos, we found in a news report from March 28, 2022, by The Sun. Per the report, the Italian national football team’s players had left the dressing room at Stadio Renzo Barbera in Palermo, Italy, in a mess after the squad’s shocking 1-0 defeat against North Macedonia that ended Italy’s hopes of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Videos of the dirty dressing room had gone viral on social media at the time.
Many Italian news outlets like Libero Quotidiano, Rompipallone.it, and Corriere dello Sport had also carried these images in their reports back then. Following this, Leonardo Bonucci, the captain of the Italian national squad had apologised on behalf of his team, as per the Daily Mail.
“It was a big mistake, next time, we'll pay more attention. We were very disappointed and we didn't think that these details make the difference sometimes. We'll pay more attention in the next matches, we apologize”, he had said. The Italian squad's communication chief, Paolo Corbi, had also apologised. However, he added that the dressing room wasn't left in as bad a condition by the team as was shown in the pictures.
