Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows survivors of a May 4 chopper crash in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. A video making the rounds on social media shows injured flight crew members in a mountainous terrain being tended to by civilians and military personnel. Allegedly, these were the survivors of the May 8 MiG-21 crash in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh. Three people died in this incident after debris from the crashed jet fell on them. OUR PROBE We noticed that in the comments section of the Instagram post, some people pointed out that this place could not be Suratgrah in Rajasthan since the terrain there was not mountainous. Subsequent searches online led us to the YouTube channel of Greater Kashmir that had shared an extended version of this video on May 4. The video was titled, “Residents come to rescue of pilots, technician after army chopper crash lands in Kishtwar.” Screams could be heard in this version of the video. A water body could also be seen in it. Also, in this video, another person could be seen lying on the ground, apparently unconscious. The Northern Command of the Indian Army tweeted a screenshot from this video on May 6, 2023, and thanked the residents of the Machhna village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district for helping in the rescue operation after an army chopper crashed there. As per the tweet, the area in the video was located near the banks of River Marua in Kishtwar. India Today’s Kishtwar correspondent Kuldeep Sharma also confirmed that this video was indeed from Kishtwar’s Marwah tehsil. Per media reports, an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) crashed near Machhna village in Marwah tehsil of the Kishtwar district on May 4.
