Fact Check
Rumor Scanner’s investigation revealed that the claim in the video, alleging that the woman was harassed for not wearing a hijab or burqa, is false. Instead, the video shows the woman being handed over to the police by the public due to political reasons.
During the investigation, it was noted that the Somoy TV logo was visible in the video. A broadcast on Somoy TV’s Facebook page on November 10 (archived version) matches the visuals of the video in question.
The caption of that video states: “Two women handed over to police on suspicion of being affiliated with the Awami League.” Furthermore, the presenter is heard saying that the woman was handed over to the police by the public on suspicion of attending an Awami League assembly in Gulistan.
Further investigation on the Dhaka Tribune website revealed a report titled “Two Women Beaten and Handed Over to Police on Suspicion of Being Awami League Activists” (Source), published on November 10. The report states that around 3 PM on November 10, two women were beaten and handed over to the police by BNP activists near Dhaka’s Gulistan Zero Point area on suspicion of being Awami League workers.
The same information was corroborated by Dhaka Post (Source) and Amader Somoy (Source).
Conclusion
The video, which shows the woman being harassed and handed over to the police for political reasons, is being falsely circulated with the claim that it happened because she did not wear a hijab or burqa. This claim is completely false.
