  • Fact Check: Viral video showing train accident makes a false claim of recent Balasore triple train tragedy India witnessed a triple train crash on June 2, 2023, in Odisha involving two passenger trains and a goods train that killed 275 and injured more than 1000 passengers. India witnessed a triple train crash on June 2, 2023, in Odisha involving two passenger trains and a goods train that killed 275 and injured more than 1000 passengers. It is stated as the worst transportation disaster in the history of India. After this disastrous accident, a video of two trains colliding is viral on social media with a narrative that it shows the recent train tragedy in Balasore. Fact Check: The claim is misleading. The video shows an accident that occurred in 2019 at Kacheguda station, Hyderabad. When we performed Google reverse image search on the key frames extracted from the viral video, we found several articles published in 2019. The news articles published in November 2019 shared the CCTV footage of the collision that occurred at the Kacheguda railway station. Here is one such video published by The Quint, where we can see the viral video. According to a report in NDTV, at least 12 people were injured after two trains collided at the Kacheguda station on November 11, 2019. Investigations revealed that the crash occurred due to a manual error. MMTS train and Hundry Express collided with each other. As both trains were travelling at low speed, the impact was minimal and there were no deaths. In the probe, it was found that the MMTS coming from Lingampally was heading towards Falunknama and around 10.30 am, it collided with the express train heading towards Secunderabad. Six coaches of MMTS and three coaches of Hundry Express were affected. https://www.indiatoday.in/ A senior official of the SCR stated that they were using cutters to rescue the driver. The accident occurred as the MMTS train overshot the signal. Following the accident, one train was cancelled and another diverted while 5 more have been cancelled. Hence, the viral video does not show the recent triple train tragedy that occurred in Balasore, Odisha. It occurred in November 2019 at Kacheguda station in Hyderabad. The claim is misleading.
