| - On August 5, following a popular uprising, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government lost power, and on August 8, an interim government was formed under Dr. Muhammad Yunus. After stepping down, Sheikh Hasina sought refuge in India. Recently, with Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election (source), rumors circulated on social media, claiming that Trump said in an interview on the “PBD Podcast” YouTube channel, “I believe Sheikh Hasina is still the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.”
Some of these posts spreading the claim can be viewed here, here, here, here, here, and here.
Fact-Check
Rumor Scanner conducted a fact-check and confirmed that the claim of Trump commenting on Sheikh Hasina’s position as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh is false. In reality, Trump made no remarks about Bangladesh on the “PBD Podcast.”
The investigation traced a recent episode of the PBD Podcast on YouTube (source) titled “Donald Trump Gets Emotional – Speaks on Tariffs, Obama & Iran | PBD Podcast | 489” (archived source), published on October 17. This interview, conducted by Patrick Bet-David, took place before Trump won the presidential election. Furthermore, Rumor Scanner found no other videos featuring Trump on the PBD Podcast within the past month.
During this podcast, Trump discussed topics like the U.S. border crisis, voter ID laws, the economy under President Biden, his business and political achievements, and other issues. He also shared his views on Obama-era economic policies, media dynamics, sanctions on Iran, foreign policy, tariffs on Chinese and Mexican imports, and more. However, at no point did he make any statements regarding Sheikh Hasina or the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Beyond this podcast, Rumor Scanner found no other credible sources or public statements where Trump mentioned Sheikh Hasina in relation to the Bangladesh Prime Minister role.
Notably, while Trump has not claimed that Sheikh Hasina remains the Prime Minister, he did post on X on October 31, condemning violence against minorities in Bangladesh, specifically mentioning Hindus and Christians. In this post (source), he expressed concern about attacks on minorities and criticized his opponent Kamala Harris, along with a pledge to restore peace.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the claim that Trump recently stated “Sheikh Hasina is still the Prime Minister of Bangladesh” during an interview on the PBD Podcast is entirely false.
