  • Fact Check: Virat Kohli NOT banned in IPL 2023, misleading social media viral in anticipation Many social media posts turned apprehensions into reality after Kohli's team maintained a slow over-rate for two matches. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check He has not been banned yet. There are apprehensions that he may face a single-match ban if RCB continues to maintain a slow over-rate for the third match this season. Has Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bangalore stand-in skipper, been banned from the Indian Premier League 2023? Social media was recently flooded with claims suggesting just that. A postcard going viral features a picture of Kohli alongside a stamp that says "banned". The postcard made in the breaking news format reads further, "Official news is yet to confirm what went wrong. Sources say Virat Kohli will miss..." India Today’s fact-check team, however, found that Kohli hasn't been banned yet. Merely apprehensions were made after his team maintained a slow over-rate for two matches. Our Probe If Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, were banned, it would have been all over the news. After attempting several rounds of keyword searches, we couldn't find any news suggesting the ban. We also checked the website and social media accounts of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. There too, we didn't find any mention or press release announcing a ban. However, there were news reports anticipating the punishment if the RCB continued with a slow pace of over. As per a Mint report, Kohli and the rest of the team received fines because of a slow over-rate (play extending 90 minutes) during the match against the Rajasthan Royals. The league fined the RCB captain Rs. 24 lakh, while each of the other team members received lesser fines. The Rules According to The Times of India, IPL teams, while bowling, are expected to complete an inning in 90 minutes. Non-compliance with this is subject to fines. The captain of the side flouting this rule for the first time is fined Rs. 12 lakh. When a team is found guilty of having maintained a slow over-rate for the second time in the same season, the captain is fined Rs. 24 lakh. The rest of the team is also fined (either Rs. 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lesser). When a team is found guilty of having maintained a slow over rate for the third time in the same season, the captain is fined Rs. 30 lakh and handed a one-match ban. The rest of the team is penalised as well. But can Kohli get a ban? There is some uncertainty surrounding who would receive a one-match ban in the event of a slow over-rate by the RCB. Kohli was named the RCB’s stand-in skipper for the game against the Punjab Kings in late April. Regular captain Faf du Plessis, according to Wisden, would bat but not field after sustaining an injury in his team’s last match against Chennai Super Kings on April 17. Kohli, on April 26, said that the South African cricketer might be back for the RCB's next game against the Lucknow Super Giants. "Faf will play the impact role again tonight. We are playing the same team as the last game. Hopefully, he will lead from the next game onwards but yeah tonight he will play the same role that he played in the last 2 games," Kohli said. Du Plessis, thus, may be punished for the transgression and not Kohli. We also spoke to Vikrant Gupta, the managing editor of Sports Tak, who said, “Virat will likely face a ‘suspended ban’ in case of dereliction for the third time. A suspended ban is different from an ordinary ban, in the sense that in the former case, the player can choose the match to serve the ban. It need not necessarily be the next match.” Thus, it's clear that the postcard suggesting Virat Kohli getting banned in IPL is misleading.
