  • Fact Check: Samsung HAS NOT pulled its billion-dollar ad campaign from the Paris Olympics India Today Fact Check found that claims regarding Samsung's withdrawal as the advertising partner are false. The article was first shared by a satirical news website. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check Samsung has not pulled its ad campaign from the ongoing Paris Olympics. An article from a satire website is being shared as fact. Widespread criticism of the Paris Olympics’ controversial opening ceremony has forced organisers to apologise. Now, social media users are claiming that the electronic giant Samsung has pulled back its billion-dollar campaign because the Olympics have allegedly gotten “too woke”. A Threads user wrote, sharing a still from the ceremony and another photo of the Samsung logo wrote: “Breaking: Samsung Drops Out of $1 Billion Advertising Campaign with Olympics, ‘They’ve Gone Woke’.” Its archive can be seen here. An article published on July 29 by a website called “UK Discoverer” was also mentioned in the Threads post. The article reads, “In a surprising and highly publicised move, Samsung Electronics has announced its withdrawal from a $1 billion advertising campaign with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The decision comes in response to what the company describes as the Olympics’ increasingly ‘woke’ agenda, a stance that has stirred significant debate within both corporate and sporting worlds.” The opening ceremony that took place on July 26 caused massive outrage, with many claiming that it disrespected Christians. India Today Fact Check found that claims regarding Samsung’s withdrawal as the advertising partner are not true. The article was first published by a satire website. Our Probe A keyword search did not yield any credible reports about Samsung pulling out from the Olympics advertisement campaign. If something like this happened, it would surely be reported widely globally. We went through Samsung’s official social media accounts and saw several Olympics posts with hashtags like #officialpartner and #Paris2024. On the official website of the International Olympic Committee, we could not find any press releases about Samsung’s withdrawal. The official website of the IOC mentions Samsung as a “global partner”. It also says that the global partnership will continue through 2028. Upon closely looking at the photo shared with the viral claim, we saw the logo “Rated Satire” in the top left corner. Searching further, we discovered that an article regarding Samsung and the Olympics was first published on July 28 on Epsotts, a satire website. Epsotts’s “About Us” section says it specialises in satire and fake news. In its fact-check article, Reuters spoke to the IOC regarding the viral claims. A spokesperson for the IOC said to Reuters that the claim is “incorrect,” adding that the IOC has an agreement with Samsung through 2028. The fact-checking website Snopes also noted in a different report that UKDiscoverer has a “track record” of posting false claims. It is thus clear that Samsung has not pulled its ad campaign from the ongoing Paris Olympics. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
