One lost her right hand A video making rounds on social media shows a woman with a severed bleeding arm sitting on the ground beside a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus, surrounded by a crowd. Those sharing the video have claimed that in Hulinahalli, Karnataka, a woman's hand was severed while climbing through a bus window. Some targeted the newly-formed Congress government in the state for this and blamed the free bus ride for women policy for this incident. Archived versions of such tweets can be seen here and here. The president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Minority Morcha in Mumbai, Wasim R Khan, tagged Rahul Gandhi in a tweet, sharing the video. He wrote in Hindi, "Goons cut off a woman's hand in a moving bus in Karnataka. Rahul Gandhi Answer!" The archived version of this tweet can be seen here. India Today found that a lorry coming from the opposite direction hit the right side of a bus and two women sitting by the windows were seriously injured and one of them lost an arm. Our Probe A keyword search led us to the various news reports about the incident. The Hindu, Kannada Prabha, and Vijaya Vani reported that a bus a lorry collided and two women sitting on window seats were injured. The reports contained Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation's statement on the incident. “On 18 June, a KSRTC bus of Nanjangud depot of Chamarajanagar division was operating on the Nanjangud-T Narsipur route near Basavarajpura,” the statement said. “At around 1.45 p.m, a lorry bearing the number TN77 Q8735, speeding in a rash and negligent manner in opposite direction, hit the bus on the rear right side. This resulted in injuries to two women passengers sitting on the window side of the bus.” The statement added that S Shanta Kumari's right hand was severed and Rajamma Nayaka was severely injured in the accident. They were taken to the Apollo Hospital in Mysuru for further treatment and an FIR was lodged against the lorry driver at the Biligere police station. The statement also addressed the viral claims and said that this did not happen while boarding the bus, as depicted in social media. India Today reached out to KSRTC's Chief Public Relations Officer Dr Latha TS, and Divisional Controller for the Chamarajnagar Division Chandrashekhar. Both confirmed that allegations making rounds on social media were false. Thus, it is safe to conclude that neither was a woman's hand cut off while climbing through a bus window nor did goons cut it off.
