  • Fact Check: Pappu Yadav 'attacked' in Prayagraj after making fun of Yogi? No, this video is from 2018 Did Pappu Yadav come under an 'attack' in Prayagraj after he mocked UP CM Yogi Adityanath? India Today's probe found that a 2018 video is being peddled with a lie. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check Neither is this video recent nor is it from Prayagraj. This video dates back to September 2018, when the then-MP alleged that a group of protestors in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur attacked him. Former Lok Sabha MP and Jan Adhikar Party president Rajesh Ranjan, better known as Pappu Yadav, recently made headlines for mocking Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Yadav mimicked him crying in Parliament. Back in 2007, Adityanath made headlines when he broke down in Parliament accusing the then UP CM Mulayam Singh Yadav of targeting him. Adityanath had spent 11 days in jail, in Parliament, he began to weep while narrating his experience at the hands of the police. Now, a video of Pappu Yadav shrieking in front of the camera from inside a car, while surrounded by mics from several news organisations. In the video, Yadav is heard saying, "I can't tell you how they have beaten me." Those sharing the clip claimed that this is how Yadav was “taught a lesson” in Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, following his taunt at Yogi Adityanath — implying that the politician was roughed up for his words. The caption of one such post roughly translates to, "Pappu Yadav, who made fun of Yogi Ji, received a warm welcome by Sanatani youths in Prayagraj." Rajasthan Bharatiya Janata Party leader Manish Soni shared the same clip, asking what had happened to the “self-professed strongman”. An archived version of such a post can be seen here. Embed video: India Today's investigation, however, found that the video in question is from 2018 and unrelated to the recent controversy. OUR PROBE If Pappu Yadav had been attacked0 following his remarks against Yogi Adityanath, it would have made the news. But, several rounds of searches with relevant keywords did not lead us to any such news report. As the logo of The Quint Hindi was visible in the viral video, we searched its YouTube channel and found that this video was uploaded on September 6, 2018. The video description mentioned that the then MP of Madhepura, Bihar, alleged that protestors attacked him during a Bharat Bandh organised by upper-caste communities. Thus, we could verify that this video was unrelated to his recent remarks on the UP CM. A subsequent search led us to several reports in ABP Live, Zee News and Amar Ujala about the alleged attack. Per them, it took place in Bihar's Muzaffarpur. Yadav's cavalcade was allegedly attacked in the Sadar area of the Khabra village in Muzaffarpur amid a Bharat Bandh called by several organisations against amendments in the SC and ST Act. A Jagran report from September 7, 2018, however, contradicted what Yadav claimed and quoted the police denying any such attack. It also examined videos from the spot and concluded that Yadav was lying. Although we did not independently verify what actually happened in Muzaffarpur in September 2018, it is evident that the video is not recent and not from Prayagraj.
