  • Authors Claim A photo of a run-down classroom in a Delhi government school. It is being compared to the official residence of former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in an apparent jibe referring to the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ controversy, which centres around allegations that Kejriwal spent crores of rupees renovating his official residence during the Covid-19 pandemic, a period when many public development projects were stalled. The archived version of the post can be seen here, which has clocked 90.5K views. The issue has reportedly become a focal point in the Delhi election campaign, with the BJP and Congress accusing the AAP convenor of extravagance during the pandemic. Fact Newschecker ran a reverse image search, which led us to the same photo featured in multiple media reports, seen here, here and here, crediting it to Reuters. “Schoolchildren study inside a classroom in Chapra district of Bihar,” read a caption in a March 29, 2018 Quint report featuring the same photo. Taking a cue, we ran a keyword search for “Chapra Bihar” in the official website of Reuters Pictures, which led us to the same photo, dated July 21, 2013, well before Arvind Kejriwal was sworn in as Delhi chief minister for the first time on December 28, 2013. “Schoolchildren study inside their classroom after having their free mid-day meal, distributed by a government-run primary school, at Brahimpur village in Chapra district of the eastern Indian state of Bihar,” read the caption of the photo, further confirming that it is not from Delhi.
