| - False: Kowloon Watch Co did not sarcastically ‘thank’ John Lee; Viral image is doctored
An image allegedly showing the Kwun Tong branch of Kowloon Watch Co with a sign that says “多謝超哥” (“Thank you, John Lee”) was widely shared through local Facebook groups and media outlets such as Dimsum Daily in mid-March.
The well-known watch store in Hong Kong is closing down its branch after more than 50 years of operation there. The sign can be read as a sarcastic commentary implying that Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu is to blame for the economic slump and the store’s closure.
The posts in several local Facebook groups (here, here and here) have garnered over 1,700 likes, 170 comments and 100 shares.
Some users commented and asked if the image was photoshopped. Annie Lab can confirm that the photo was digitally manipulated. The original sign simply says “光榮結業,” which can be roughly translated to “closing down.”
Below is the comparison between the manipulated image and the original photo of the storefront:
Other images of the same storefront with the original sign are easily searchable on the internet; for example, on Facebook, LIHKG, a video uploaded by SocREC, and in a news report by the local newspaper Oriental Daily.
Other signs in the store, visible on white paper on the right side of the door, are also about the closure with an expression of gratitude to the customers for their support.
The manipulated image appears to have visible traces of digital manipulation — the background color of the new text does not fully blend into the light yellow of the paper used for the sign, leaving distinctive discoloured edges.
This makes it clear that the original sign was overlaid with the new text.
